What's the best tasting artificial sugar?

Splenda is by far the best. My g/f uses it in different recipes all the time, and it's great; tastes the same as sugar (it is based from sugar -- sucralose), though it doesn't quite have the same consitency. I've made chocolate chip cookies from it, and Kate makes poundcake from it; both tasted great.

It's also used in Hansen's Diet Sodas, which are really good.

Are you going on the atkins, or just cutting down on carbohydrates?

Yeah, I'm doing the Atkins. I'm aiming to lose 10 to 15 pounds.

Splenda actually is sugar sortof. They take a sugar molecule and bond another atom to it - can't remember of what - which basically makes it indigestible. Tastes pretty damn close to the real thing.

Chlorine. Really.

Splenda is not bad. It is actually the sweetener we used in the Development of our Diabetic Brownies for our senior project. A tip for anyone baking with Splenda is that the use of Splenda greatly reduces the actual baking time so make sure to check often. The Splenda you purchase in the store is actually a 1:1 replacement for sugar, while the concentrate is 600x as sweet as sugar.

does this mean it doesn't have the bad side effects of some of the other sugar substitures (ie, no cancer and whatnot)?

Yes.

It is sucralose; you can look up the chemical information, if you want. It's good stuff. 😀

I should add that there is one site out there that claims a lot of negative things about splenda, each of which has been negated by every other source out there. That source is Dr. Joseph Mercola; I'm not sure what his agenda is, so I can't say much one way or another about his research. He claims that Splenda is toxic, and that it raises ha1c levels, both claims which have been sufficiently negated, IMHO, by the ADA.

All of these "artificial" sweeteners are bad for you if you have too many every day. The key word is "artificial". So yes, too much and you will increase your chances of cancer and whatever else. Moderation is the key.
