Zonealarm-Had it running three weeks no problems. Free too unless you want the Pro version.

Just wanted to add that you'll want the Pro version of ZoneAlarm if you connect to the Internet via a LAN. For a standalone system with Dial-up only the freeware version should be more than sufficient.

i prefer MS Proxy, it has good firewall properties.

you may want to try norton internet securities.
it works damn great and is easy to configure.

I think someone posts an article a while back that Norton Internet Security has some loop-hole and is not very secure... I think it lets certain stuff pass through the firewall intentionally... you might wanna do a search and see what comes up...

ZoneAlarm died on me *before* I installed SP1. No amount of reinstallations or tweaking fixed the problem. So, I went with Sybergren Secure Desktop. Just as free and I fell just as safe, if not more.

I have been running Zone Alarm for quite some time now. Ever since I saw it on GRC.com. I have run it under Win 98, 98SE, Win ME, 2000 Pro and 2000 Advanced Server. I have had no problems whatsoever with Zone Alarm.

Nobody really talks about Conseal Firewall but I think that's a rock solid peice of firewall software. Much more flexibility than with ZoneAlarm or BlackICE...

Zonealarm - easiest and most stable way to go. Protects dial-up and LAN (DSL, CABLE, etc.). Used to use Black-Ice but found that the updates and system stability issues were a big pain - a new update every few weeks - once 3 in one week. ZoneAlarm also protects your system from sending out trojans via e-mail by default. Load it and go to www.grc.com to test your ports - you will not be disappointed.
