This will be my first smartphone and with all the choices out there, I'm overwhelmed.
Not sure if this makes a difference, butI've been with T-mobile for 6+ years with their family plan and I'm happy with their service.

What say ye'?? :)

Yeah, I was going to suggest the L90 as well. You may want to root and get a microSD if you get one, so you can use external storage for apps.

The Lumia 635 is also good, and you can use microSD for apps without any additional steps.

Might be able to get a used Nexus 4 around that price (maybe a tad more). That'd be an excellent phone on T-Mobile. Not LTE, but HSPA+ is pretty decent on T-Mobile.

Only problems I had with my N4 was the battery was usually pretty bad. 8-12 hours with about an hour and a half screen on time.

Save up an extra $30-50 and get a Moto G. Very good phone for the price.

Trade in your last POS for the Note 4?

Ah, sadly this still puts you way above $150. The funny thing is, you get way more when you go up to $200 or $250.

A year ago I was able to buy a ZTE Supreme (aka ZTE Vital) for $150. God what a steal that was, and still is pretty much. I see nothing that touches it even today for $150. But that calibur of a deal should be coming up within the next 2 months if you can be patient and keep an eye on the deal sites. We may see the latest gen Moto G deals for under $150 in the next couple months.

Great replies guys!!

The Moto G looks like the popular "good buy" everyone's recommending.....the only thing that looks negative on that is:

"Optimized to work with 3G (UMTS/HSPA+) networks when roaming outside the US. Only supports 2G coverage on T-Mobile"

I wonder why only 2G coverage??
I really don't want to change carriers as my wife & I have a pretty good plan with T-Mobile being long time customers (unlimited talk, text, and free 3GB of data).

BTW, I can wait a little while to get a better deal on a phone and I can also slightly inscrease my budget if it makes a HUGE difference.......(I currently have a Nokia 710 Win8 phone and don't want to go back to that).

The L90 can be had for $100 and that's a great deal but no LTE.
Best cheap phone with LTE is the LG F6. LTE with awesome battery life.
The worst part is the 4gb memory. Although you can use micro SD I haven't figure out how to store apps on the micro yet.

I don't mind spending up to $200 if it's worth it.......I'll generally use a phone a for a couple of years or more.

Get a secondhand G2. Verizon version will work perfectly if you're in a refarm area (which most people are).
