Use this, and just attach it around/through the base of the LCD. Anyone tries to pick up the monitor, and there's 120dB of shrieking. The "sensitive" setting is even more secure, but you might accidently set it off when you bump the desk.

I was going to suggest this!
Though for the counterweight, use something that can be removed easier, through a hidden hatch maybe.

Keep your door locked, don't show it off, take out an insurance policy...

But let me put your concerns in a different light...What is more tempting...a ~$400 17" lcd you have to unplug from a computer and wall to steal, OR somebody's $2,000 notebook you just take while they are not looking.

I understand your concern, but depending on the school it shouldn't be a problem. I go to Baylor university, and theft in the dorms isn't really a big deal, heck we have 17" lcds all across campus in kiosk stations.

But my cousin went to UVA (university of Virginia) and she said people we so worried about theft (and it happened a lot there) that they locked their laptops to the lecture desks while in class so they won't get stolen !

They make locks that attach to the device, I knew some people that had them on their laptops. But really as long as you keep your door shut when you aren't there I wouldn't worry to much about theft. We never locked the door to our room and my roommate had his 19 inch flatscreen out in the front room and all of our stero stuff and dvd's and music was out and it never got stolen.

But you can always lock your door, and once you get settled in and know everyone around you then you will be less cautious, it also helps to place your stuff not in view if the front door was open so people jsut walking by won't spot it. And basically if your monitor gets stolen someone around you will know something about it, word travels fast in dorms.

I'm assuming you referred to me - and that is exactly what my friends dad did too...Except it was from office Depot.

But WOW...securuing a LAPTOP while you are in a lecture? That seems kinda extreme...

And the idea about using a 21 inch CRT is REALLY good...The only reason I'd want an LCD is because it produces a lot LESS heat - and this way you could really make it safe and still get the LCD benefit of easier to read text and reduced heat output

Bah! Shuttleteam and his good ideas! ;)

I'd either do what shuttleteam said, but make sure like he said you lots of weight in it, in bags so whenever you leave college or want to take the monitor, you can. Other idea like someone said earlier I like, is to put a chain through it, but I don't know how you'd feel about drilling through a nice LCD screen. Or you could get one of those Samsung mirrors now that have a "hidden" television and computer screen in them... if you have the money, in that case, don't worry if your LCD gets stolen ;)

You can always take some nails and drill some holes in the base and nail that to something like your desk. Another solution would be to crazyglue it to the table and take it off with a razor when you want to move it. Another option, which is what my friend did when he took his stuff to college was to hide it at night. He put it in his drawer each time he left. Its annoying but who looks for an lcd monitor in the drawer? He also unfortunately had a shuttle xpc which he kept locked in his car and after the snowstorm it kinda stopped working.

add laser detector, those u seen in the movies where the laser forms a mesh and if it is blocked, alarm goes off.

or u can booby trap the LCD, tie a fish line to it, connect it to a a claymore (so u dun kill urself) or connect to a triger of gun. Punji bamboo spikes works great too ( learned from Vietcong game0

Winchester 12 guage pump.

Sit quietly in a darkened corner of the room and when the perps come to swipe your panel just rack the slide on that baby and say in a low voice 'Go ahead...Make my day...'

That one with the shrieking alarm would be really good.. with the dorms such close quarters everyone would know something is up.

Last time I checked loud shrieking sounds are common in dorms. Most people I know learned to ignore them after a few weeks. Now if you played some loud music and had an alarm that would shut the music off, then people might notice the silence.

Familiar with Goldberg? Think about the famous Honda commercial!

When the LCD is removed from its intended location, bad things happen. Perhaps the floor could open up and drop the perpetrator to a mezzanine level. To their left, a vat of super sticky egg custard molasses is revealed. To their right, a large colony (no less than 10,000 workers!) of European Hornets is revealed. Guess who will win!

Ok, this is a real answer...not that the others werent real...but...yea they werent.

On the base for the LCD panel drill a couple holes through it and then into your desk. Then use a shiny brass screw and nut to screw it in, tighten hard and somebody will have to have a wrench to get it out. Get an odd size and itll be harder. dont use a wing nut.

Does it have to be a shiny brass screw??? Couldn't it be a brushed stainless steel or perhaps an anodized aluminum?

Actually not a bad suggestion. Some hardware centers sell security screws and special drivers that are used to fasten the screws. Perhaps something of this nature would work as well. It would at least be a deterrent.

Don't be that guy. You have a little trunk with a padlock too don't you?

Have a little faith in human nature. Lock your door and trust your roomate to do the same.

make sure to mark your screen with your name, and take down any and all serial numbers in the odd event it does get stolen.

btw if someone is going to take your lcd, they are probably going to take a hell of a lot more too.
