Whats the best Resident Evil for PS1?

Due to the new movie I have an urge to try out a Resident Evil game for my Playstation 1

In your opinion what is the best version and why?

Resident Evil II is probably the best value, it is a 2 disc set and you can play both as Leon and then Claire. Each character starts at a different place so the game is different. Nemesis is also quite good but for overall value I have to give the nod to RE II. After Nemesis the whole series kind of tanked in my opinion.

I liked all of them, but thought 2 was the strongest out of the 3.

RE2 was good but if you want to spookiest I think RE(directors cut if you can find it) was the best. I mean your in a masion in the middle of nowhere with no one but a couple team members. Being in the city just doesnt sound spooky.

I day RE 1 all the way. Scared the sh!t out of me playing alone in the dark some times. I played the second one too, but it just wasn't the same. The whole haunted mansion deal really worked.
