What's the best PSU right now?

I just realized that with my new x750, I can't cross fire 5970's!!!! I did the PSU calculator, and it says I need something in the 870W (most likely closer to 1KW)

Crossfire 5870's also yield 800W, and forget about the gtx480!! (This is OC's to 4GHz, 8 USB connected, 2 HDD's, 1 SSD, X-Fi Ti, etc.)

From what you said you will be running in your first post...crossfired HD5870 would be no problem for the X-750...none at all.

dual HD5970 and probably dual GTX 480 might be pushing it too far though.

Are you a benchmarker or do you need that thing for GPGPU?!

If not: There is no sense in 4 GPUs, 'cause you'll have at least a 4 frames lag...

Meh, I've had quite a few good power supplies.

Back in the day, you couldn't get me to buy anything other than a Fortron/Sparkle unit. The 350watt FSP was the best power supply one could get. Of course this is back in the day when AGP was the main video card slot and things were so power hungry. However, the 350w FSP units were capable of putting out 500w stable if need be 🙂 They were that good. On top of that, the PSU was only about $25-$30. Cheap and the best money could buy. Why anyone ever bought anything else back then was a mystery to me.

After that, it was the 510 PC Delux. This thing was the best in it's day as well. But it also came with a price tag of $200 when no other PSU was anywhere near that cost. Also, power hungry PCIe video cards were just starting to come out and they were not mainstream. Still, I've not exactly been mainstream with my computers and found a deal on one back then for $100. Man that thing rocked.

Now a days though, the PSU market has really opened up. There are MANY good power supplies out there from various companies. Sure there is a lot of junk, but there is much that is not. Where as before there was only a dozen or less power supplies I would consider worthy purchases, now there is almost too many to count. Anything thus far recommended would work.

Personally, I have 3 power supplies I've been using for the past few years. I picked them all up from CompUSA on it's final day of liquidation for $30 to $40 each.

Thermaltake Tough Power Pro 850watt

Thermaltake and Cooler Master were not typically known for being good PSU brands. However, those lines were great as they were made by either channel well or seasonic. Those 3 are still top notch power supplies. Any of them is more than capable of running an overclocked system with a CF or SLI video card setup.

I picked up a Corsair HX620 for $100 (absolutely unreal deal at the time) about 2 weeks before they shuttered...it was the last one left, no way I would have gotten it if I waited any longer.

I wish I had picked up a CM Real Power Pro 850W as well...I could kick myself for not getting one.

I purchased a Seasonic X-750 recently to replace an older OCZ unit and it works like a dream.
