What's the best OTC cold/flu medicine?

I've used almost everything, though knock on wood I've only had the flu once in my life.

Theraflu really worked wonders for me. Obviously it was temporary, but it cut the aches, opened up my sinuses a bit and overall made me feel halfway human. Nothing else did much good. That, coupled with frequent long and extremely hot showers, is my recommendation.

depends on what symptoms you're trying to alleviate. most of them have the exact same ingrediants in very similar dosages

I've found that Zicam Nasal swabs actually work pretty well for me. I don't get sick too often, but if I ever feel one coming on I start using Zicam + Coldeez Zinc lozenges and generally am back to normal in a day or two.

Once you've got the cold, I say Mucinex. It's a wonder drug for me.

MucinexD which has pseudoephedrine works wonders I've found. Zicam can be helpful too.

IMO, there is no one single "BEST" for cold/flu symptoms.

Match YOUR symptoms with the OTC remedy that is designed to help those symptoms.

I can't take anti-histamines when I have sinus/chest congestion, so I'm limited to Sudafed and similar decongestant-containing remedies.

They all have the same ingredients.

Acetominophen or Ibubrophen (usually the former) for fever and pain
DXM or Guaifenesin (DXM in 90% of medicine) for cough
pseudoephedrine for sinus.

I'm pretty sure I have a cold right now. Probably getting everyone here at work sick.

usually once you have symptoms you are beyond really being contagious in you day to day grind.

Nasal congestion is my biggest problem usually so I just stick to nasal sprays. Fast and easier than a pill.

when I have a really bad cough though alcohol is the solution and sleep.

I take Dayquil, and then 500mg of Vitamin C in the morning, and again before bed. 1000 total. Don't know how much it really helps if any, but even if its a placebo, as long as I think I feel better, then whatever. I know some people who swear by it, but also read places it has no real effect. I have it though, so why not/

I tried that once and got a nose bleed so I haven't tried it since. Niquil is awesome for getting to sleep during a cold. I think it just knocks you out but that's good enough.

In some states, pseudoephedrine is under stricter control because it is used in the production of meth; medicines containing it are stored behind the counter and you must ask the pharmacist for them. Consequently, the cold/flu medicines sitting on the (customer-accessible) shelf contain phenylephrine instead, at least in these states. Phenylephrine is anecdotally much less effective.

But yes, medicines with the same combination of active ingredients are pretty much interchangeable. Occasionally the exact dosages will vary some.
