If you had to choose out of the big guys, Dell, HP, Compaq, Gateway... whatever else there is... what would you choose?

Price/hardware/support

If I had to choose between them I'd kill myself. That or take up surfing, skiing, etc. - something interesting & fun enough that I'd never want to use a computer again.

Boy that's a little dramatic, wouldn't you say?

No

I have to say that my Powerbook is the nicest computer I have ever owned, but as far as pc's go I would have to say Dell for desktops and IBM for notebooks.

I hate OEM computers.

If one of the above options was required, I would probably go with HP/Compaq.

I'm not going to recommend Dell since they don't give you the AMD option (Thats really the only reason why)
I'm not going to recommend Gateway since I think the company may curl up and die some day ... and the Support will be gone
I'm not going to recommend IBM as they tend to cost a bit more (though they do have a history of providing solid support)
Apple makes great products, however, the Price/Performance is a bit pricy.

There are a bunch of smaller sized computer shops that sell fully built systems for less than alienware/falconNW prices.
Cyberpower, United Micro, AmberPC, AVADirect ... etc ...
I'd take any one of these over any large OEM any day. Especially since they will often use quality components such as Asus Motherboards and Athlon64 CPUs.

:disgust:

what ive never had an issue with them, my HS and college used them and they were always fine

I have a notebook from them. Flawless for over 7 years, and at 500mhz and 128mb RAM it's fine for last resort word processing and internet surfing.

Notebooks is IBM, no doubt there.

Desktops, dell builds a nice machine when it works correctly. HP email support is much better than Dell. I had a response within an hour of sending it at 10pm.

dell (even tho tech support blows)

Dell tech support ROX.

I handle everything through email, and they ahve the replacement parts for me next day.

Getting new parts is easy but every tried calling their tech support based in india? If not, be glad you didn't. i am sure they are smart. just can't understand what they are saying.

Then the only conclusion I can arrive at is that you're a fool.

Used to be Dell for desktops. But I've since started switching over to Compaq. You get more for your buck with them.

I like IBM latptops, but I just can't justify the cost for what little you get in the way of specs.

More bang for your buck = Dell

Best bang for most bucks = IBM
