1992 Geo Metro Convertible ($700 for the car... let me know when an Insight/Prius owner passes me on overall value =p )

Well, my Insight is worth 2X what I paid a year ago, though I bet you could sell your car for much more also. There were Metros going on Ebay for $7,000 recently.

I only recently started tracking mileage for my 06 elantra. The first tank I calculated got 37mpg average. The last 4-5 tanks were all 33-35mpg. I have been driving to save gas recently and I wasn't using A/C since it was cool out for that first tank.

I've been using my tripometer to record the miles driven since fillup and then when I fill up I divide the gas I put in by the miles traveled. I doubt this is the most accurate way to calculate it but it should be ok right? I can't think of a better way without buying one of those scanner things.

That is the BEST and most accurate way to calculate your mileage. Those instant mileage and average mpg info displays on newer cars are not very accurate. The one on my Subaru always reads 1-2 mpg high.

So a cars computer can be trusted to perform thousands if not millions of calculations per second but it can't be trusted with simple mileage calculations.

Not trying to argue, but just wondering if anyone knows how those displays are calculating differently.

I got a 97 I30 (same car essentially)... recently broke 31 MPG (99% highway) cruising at 70 mph. Over the trip I avg'ed 27-28 mpg.
Otherwise I average 19-22 mpg mixed driving.

I compare both my instant a trip mileage against what I see at the pump and they are within +/- 1 or 2 %. Pretty accurate if you ask me. As tires wear they will offset your odometer as much.

BEST = Free when it comes to anything related to MPG. The name of the game is saving money, right? You need OBD2 for most of those gauges to work (based on posts here it seems like I'm in the minority driving an ODB1 car though :( )

32.9 in my Mazda 3 GT. I have a heavy foot, so if I slowed down a bit and didn't accelerate as fast, I could get more out of it.

I average 28.5 mpg, last fill up was 29.9 mpg.

That only works if your speedometer is calibrated and you always fill up at the same pump. Check your speedo against a portable GPS and prepare to be disappointed, though you'll occasionally find one that's right on the money. And pumps can vary by a fair amount, not only in how many gallons they actually dispense per "gallon," but also how many they dispense (or suck into the recovery system) before the shut off engages. If you top off, you'll get even farther off the mark. And of course, fuel temperature changes how dense it is, both during fillups and while driving.

The point is, neither method is guaranteed to be 100% accurate unless you've got outside means of verification. But if you always do things the same way, you can be pretty confident in comparative figures from tank to tank for your particular car.

My Scangauge was way too expensive when you consider that it was clearly made in a garage out of Radio Shack parts, but on the other hand, I've been averaging about 2 MPG better thanks to the instant feedback. At that rate, it will pay for itself in five months. Plus, it's a fun nerd-toy.

Just drove from Detroit to Louisville in an '08 Honda Fit (automatic, Sport trim).

Went 435 miles on one tank, which is about 40 MPG. Went 55 mph most of the way. A/C on.

32-35mpg in my '93 Cutlass Ciera. OBDI, 3.3L V6, and doing ~70 to Boston for a driving school. Worst I had was something like 11.2. MAF and a couple other sensors were dirty, causing it to run rich during a colder MI winter, with wheelspin.

On my 2002 Mazda Protege:

Last fill: 38.34 MPG/7.3 L/100km (mostly highway).
Best: 41.41 MPG/6.8 L/100km (I dont know how I pulled this one off...it was 100% city driving).
Average: ~35 MPG

I am calculating these values just by plugging in numbers on gasbuddy.com. I find it strange that I am getting such high mileage when my car is only rated 22MPG city and 28MPG hwy. I dunno...maybe its my driving habits, or wrong calculations.

16.7 in my 93 cherokee 6-cyl 330,000 miles
13.8 in my 99 f-150 5.4 litre 4x4
these are averages. I've probably done 23 hwy in the Jeep.

buying a prius next month & selling both of these...
