I have a MS Explorer Optical mouse and use a Ratzpad. If feels great almost like the mouse is on roller bearings. I used to just use the desktop but it started wearing the laminate off of the desk

All my friends with opticals use Ratpadz. I have one here at work and don't use any pad.

Whatever it is, it should be dark in color and a solid color.

Black surface, you may be able to get away with blue,... but i know for a fact opticals don't work on white...

And i vote Everglide Giganta... great pad...

I've been using my MS Wheelmouse Optical on my Ratpad for a few months now and it works great. I've had no problems.

In my experience with the same mouse as your planning on getting it doesnt seem to work any differently at all no matter aht mouse pad I'm using.
It works perfectly fine with any pad or none.

Ive heard nothing but good things about the func pads which is suppose to be better than the everglide and ratzpad. I dont know... I don't plan on replacing my ratzpad which is pretty nice. I am not a hardcore gamer but it works well with both the ms explorer and logitech optical that I use.
