Excellent experiences with Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 (with wire). Accurate, zero lag, comfortable in hand, easily accessible buttons and slick wheel. I can fully recommend it.

Nothing beats a Logitech Wingman Extreme gaming mouse. :)

Actually I'm so used to it, I can't switch to anything else. lol

The Intellimouse Explorer. The extra buttons are great for programming stuff in games like "Use", "Open", "Select", etc. Optical, of course, is killer. It's a big mouse so if you have little hands, you may want to try before you buy.

The Boomslang? I thought they went out of business?:Q

Logitech dual optical, absolutely no flick whatsoever, cool looking, and not too expensive.

I like the Intellimouse Optical. I tried a Intellimouse Wireless Optical and it was laggy as all hell.

So far all of the mice recommended so far are USB, which is less than ideal for gaming (it offloads all calculations to the CPU). The Kensington Optical Elite's CCD takes 6,500 pictures/sec, and it has Mouse Works, long recognized as the industry's best software for programming input devices. Finally, it is available in USB or PS/2.

Edit: USB is another evil Intel plot.

I find pretty much any mouse with good side grip the same, but you should most definitely go 2nd or later generation optical. Ball mice are dead.

Also, think about getting a good gaming mousepad - the sUrface 1030 is great and is what I use. :)

For a mousepad, if you get a ball mouse, a get a 3M Precision Mousing surface. If you get an optical mouse, get an Everglide Giganta.

Ball mice are not dead. The original poster asked which was the best mouse for FPS gaming, not which required the least cleaning, which had the best warranty, or which had the latest gee whizz optical technology. I provided him the answer, the Boomslang is the best (read: most accurate, responsive) mouse for gaming.

You could easily argue some rumored build quality or ball mouse cleaning issues with the Boomslang, but you can't say it isn't the best mouse for gaming. It is better because of the way it forces you to hold it (finger controlled, not arm) and it doesn't suffer from the tracking issues of the opticals, some people say "oh, they don't have those issues anymore", I call B.S. on that. I've yet to use an optical that doesn't suffer from some kind of tracking issues, be it hardware or software related, the simple fact is they have issues. I have three Boomslangs, and have either owned or purchased and returned at least 5 opticals (various versions). Not a single one of the opticals even was in the same ballpark as the Razer mouse. If I could use a $40 dollar mouse that required no cleaning instead of a $100 that did and get equal or better performance, believe me I would be glad to save the ~$60. I will say I have yet to try the logitech dual optical, but I expect it will be not much different.

As for the usb issue, I'm not really too concerned with a usb mouse dragging down my XP1900+ ;), but for those that are the Boomslang comes with a ps2 adapter and includes a ps2 rate adjuster built into it's software if you care to use it.

Opticals suck....(at least for now :))

Boomslang or the Microsoft Optical 3.0 with the cord. You can flick with each, and it won't mess either up. I'd go with the optical personally.

You also forgot to mention that Karna (the company that makes the Boomslang) is no longer out of buisness :).

My friends have a Razor and I'd kill to have one ;).

PS/2? Excellent. I think I found another mouse...my 6 year old Kensington Thinking Mouse (actually a Mac mouse with an adb to PS/2 adapter) is a bit long in the tooth, and I don't love the feel of Kensington's four-button ball mouse today.
As for USB, it's another evil Intel plot.

The BS is the best for FPS games... if you get one that works right (may require multiple RMAs). Because of Razer's poor QC and my nightmare with it, I wouldn't feel right recommending it to others. However, I won't stop anyone from getting one. But I will still offer a caveat that they did not go out of business for no reason (I don't know of their current operating status, but I don't care either).

The mouse I would stand behind is the Logitech Wingman Gaming Mouse. This ball mouse is simply the most reliable, most comfortable, and accurate mouse I've used. I got mine when they were still being manufactured for $30 at Fry's, but I believe they are discontinued now. I think you can still find some, but I don't know where. This would really be your best option IMO. Instead of a wheel, it just has three simple buttons. Some might say a wheel is necessary, but for FPS games, I think items and weapons are best bound to hotkeys. If you can't find this mouse, another great mouse I would highly recommend is the Logitech Dual Optical. It's simply my favorite optical mouse, and I have absolutely no problems with flickshots using this mouse (using a fUnc sUrface 1030 mousepad JFYI). Both of these Logitech mice come with USB>PS2 adapters, so you will have no problems with interface issues if the need arises. Good luck in finding the right mouse for you :)

Logitech IFeel, you get the vibrations in the mouse in almost any game, from Tribes 2 to UT, and also in games like Black and White.

plus its optical and cool blue look.

I just got my Logitech Mouseman Dual Optical and I love it. I'm a huge FPS gamer and I used the original MS Intellimouse Explorer for 2 years. It had always jittered, but it started speeding up, slowing down, and pausing randomly in the past 2 months. I got the Dual Optical one and my accuracy has imrpoved quite a bit. It is much smoother, has a great feel, and plenty of buttons to boot. I stuck with my Intellimouse for so long just because I loved the fact I didn't have to clean it every 2 days. I'll never go back to ball mice, even if it does mean sacrificing a little accuracy.

The Boomslang feels like butt also. I've used one and hated it and I've had 3 friends who have tried it out and really tried hard to like it, but in the end sent it back and either kept their old mice or got opticals. It is too quirky feeling. If they would remodel it more like a regular mouse, but keep the speed it may have a lot of potential. As it stands, it is just too oddly shaped (and too expensive) for most gamers, even hardcore fps players.

I read it`s a great mouse for gaming the Dual Optical by Logitech,I`m still using the old Logitech Optical Mouseman Wheel(blue one) and that has never given me any problems in gaming like UT,Q3 etc.

Logitech First Mouse+ :D

I seriously use this mouse and have been for the last 4 years. It's really reliable, durable, robust and simple to use. It's a regular everyday mouse with a ball inside it. Has a scroll wheel and 2 buttons. It uses a PS/2 port and you can use PS2 Rate Plus or its Driver Software to enhance its Refresh Rate.

If your cash is tight you can't go wrong with a Logitech ball mouse, for $5 the S35 (3 button) or S48 (2 button + wheel). I've been using the S35 for over 3 years now, tried MS regular/optical & Logitech optical, nothing comes close to this cheap a$$ mouse for price/performance, I would never pay $100 for a Razer.
