Everquest probably...

Don't start playing any MMORPG unless you have extremely good time management skills, they're way too addicting.

Horizons: Empire of Istaria is just starting, was released on the 9th. I beta tested it, and it seems to be a VERY promising game. Although I can't afford the monthly fees right now.

A month ago i would have said Dark Age of Camelot, but they just comitted suicide with their new expansion, Trials of Atlantis.

There are so many bugs introduced in this expansion that it is now unplayable.

No fighting?! And here I was going to suggest Shadowbane...

MMORPGS are lame when there's no fighting. PVP and GVG is where it's at. Why bother carefully tuning your character with the very best in equipment only to find that you cannot find an even match in computer-controlled monsters?

Shadowbane was the first MMORPG I played and I cannot think about playing another until it is pvp-oriented like Shadowbane. You level quickly (make a character in a week) and spend the rest of the time building an uber guild with good strategies to take out the enemies.

I like shadowbane. Granted, it is filled with bugs (although expansion came out today so maybe that fixed them, i havent checked it out yet), but the gameplay is superb. If you like PvP, imho, you cant beat it. battles with 100 people rock.

I played Shadowbane from release up until Nov 05 when I cancelled. I played on Carnage.

It was a great game.

Edit: Do any of you know if I reactivate my account will I still be able to merge my characters to another server, or when they took down Carnage did they delete the characters (ie, the merge period is over?)

I think he meant no arguing over which is best.

I remember shadowbane since '99. i thought it was awseome then, but the graphics just disappointed me. DARKTIDE FOREVER!!! (AC's first PvP server)

Shadowbane, just like UO is NOT about the graphics. You have to play it and understand it to love it. It was really hard for me to give it up, and this is after a lot of my buddies quit playing it...

i dunno, i actually liked the graphics of UO.

i think if a game is 3d, it should be GOOD looking. i may give shadowbane a try, how strong a computer do i need to run it?

The engine doesn't scale extremely well, but I did notice a slight improvement from my GF3 Ti200 -> 9800 Pro. Fortunately I've played it on a GF2 MX, Duron 600, 256M system and it was "playable", but I'd say a regular GF3+, 512M, and a 1.5GHz+ processor would be more than enough.

Edit: Changed the specs a bit. Lots of RAM is a must for SB.

well, ok heres the deal. i am not gonna pimp the game a bunch because it does have issuesaside from the bugs i mentioned (these bugs basically involve the game's .exe file committing an error and crashing the whole game forcing you to re-log). I havent played in about a month cuz of school, but on some of the larger scale battles (150-200 people particpating) the lag could get real hairy and would completely lag fux the entire server map. but uh as far as computer power goes, 512MB ram is a must, and i would recommend a ~2GHz CPU and like a radeon 9500pro ish type cideo card to get good graphics. depending on the IQ you want you can go up and down with yur system specs. Check out my two rigs to get an idea. my shuttle box is the one i play SB on and it runs very vell.

but yah, all that crap aside, the game is a ton of fun to play, both in PvP and in XPing (no XP for PvP which is good). the great thing about it is the fact that you can actually build cities and manage them etc., and the guild politics is always challenging. GL if you try it!

don't they have a free trial for SB?

check their website, i think they may have like a free 10 day trial period. I'll even be so nice as to include the link here

if you are just checking the game out, i recommend starting ont he cataclysm server, the XP is way faster there (can get level 30 in one night) however the other servers offer different playing rules that u may like better
