What's the best midsized car?

im looking to buy a new car. my price range is $12000-$20000. anyone have any reccomendations? i was looking at the 2002 hyundai sonata GLS , and i gotta say, that car has a lot of bang for its buck. i just want some input on what i should look for/at. thanks

Pretty big range there. I would say a Ford sportstrac four door stripped you can get for 20K right now with bargining. Very functional, good visablity and decent power.

The only worthwhile mid-sized car that you can find in the $12,000 - $20,000 range is the Hyundai Sonata IMHO. But I'm not a fan of Hyundai at all. The 12-20 range is for compact sedans like the Focus, Protege, Sentra, Corolla, etc.

GOOD mid-sized sedans are in the 20-25 range and include the Altima, Camry, and Accord.

Hyundais are great cars, (perhaps not from the performance perspective) but with that warranty, you can't go wrong.

But you can get lower priced 4 cycl camrys and accords for under 20 grand fairly easily...you won't get the options and warranty you get on a hyundai, but you will get a better "name" plate...which is important to many people.

And don't buy a used car, you get a bad one and you'll regret it for the rest of your life.

Lower - end Accords and Camrys under $20k do nothing for me. I'd rather have a loaded Civic or Corolla than a stripped Accord or Camry w/o a V6.

Agreed. My mom has had the low end camrys and they just kinda suck. Well, the loaded camry's kinda suck IMO as well, but not as much as the cheap ones. 😉

Holy sh!t, am I dreaming or something?

😀

lower end altima's are also under 20k.. however i agree with NSF4, i'd rather have a loaded compact than stripped midsize.

the hyndia isnt to bad, i dont like the styling a whole lot, but its a decent car other than that.

What I mean is that you can get a loaded V6 Sonata with leather and full accessories for under $20k. In that sense, it's the best buy out there.

But I personally don't like their reputation or their resale value. On the other hand, they are making great strives to equal the Japanese in quality.

Reputation, quality, and reliability, which are important to many people. 😉

Toyota and Honda have proven all three. Hyundai hasn't.

That's exactly my point to freebee. Thank you NFS4. By the way, Toyota, Honda, and Acura are the only cars that my family currently owns.

Edit: fixed typo.

All These guys are crazy recommending these small foreign cars. They can't even come close to the explorer truck chassis sorts trac.

Go drive a Ford Sport Trac then all these others. There is really no comparison. You can stack people in the FORD, have a small fold out pickup bed, and a V8 power.

My sis recently got one for 22K loaded and the sticker was 26K. I'm sure you can talk them down to at least "invoice".

Huh?? Why are you recommending a wannabe pickup truck to someone that wants a car? That makes no sense. Also consider that the Sport Trac gets poorer gas mileage than any of the cars mentioned above. I'll also assure you that three people would be more comfortable in the back seat of a Camry, Altima, or Accord than in a Sport Trac.

The Sport Trac is a piece of sh!t anyway IMHO. It tries to be a sport-ute and a pickup in one and is no good at either--it doesn't have the closed in space of an SUV and it can't carry near as much stuff as a pickup truck. Worthless...if you want a pickup, get a pickup. If you want an SUV, get an SUV.

Again, why are you recommending a truck to someone that wants a mid-sized sedan?????:Q:Q:Q

Well first of all like Onery eluded to those little rice burners aint no mid size car. And The sports trac 2wd does'nt try and be anything other than what it is. and thats a real mid sized "vechile" which can haul 5 people confortableby, a carry some decent sized stuff in it's small bed.

It is a sedan basically. As is most SUV's and pickups sold today. If you don't believe me see who they are marketing them to. Families not your hard core commerical contruction workers or serious offroadrs.

But you right. It does nothing great but IMO does alot more than any of those rice burners and is safer in an accident vs. them if you believe in the laws of physics. That's the point of this car/truck. It does it all but no individual thing as outstanding as the class leaders and it's very inexpensive. Sure a S420 is more comfortable, but can you haul a 1/2 pallete of concrete around? Sure a civic gets better gas but can you put 5 200 lbs. guys in it confortabley?

I'd go with an Altama, Camry or Accord that?s 99-01 with less than 30,000 miles. If they were 25k when bought, they will be much under 20k now. Since new cars depreciate in value so much, unless you absolutely need a new one, get a slightly used one. Very good bang for the buck.

What does that have to do with anything?? He asked for a mid-sized car, not a truck that can haul peat moss and a couple of logs in the bed.

If he had said he wanted a pickup, then I could understand the recommendation. But I don't understand how you could fit a sport-trac into a discussion about mid-sized or even compact CARS.

Lastly, what does hauling a 1/2 pallete of concrete have to do with someone wanting a passenger car for transportation???

I dont think you understand though. He was looking for a mid-size car, not a truck/SUV.
