What is the best Linux distribution? I have Mandrake 6, and it's kind of a pain in the ass, in pretty much every aspect. Anyone have some good suggestions? Is Redhat any good at all?

I love Slackware...it's minimal but refined...not many bugs.

Personal "top 3": RedHat 6.2, Debian 2.2 and Slackware 7.

Yup, RH7.0 sucks. But RH6.0 sucked also, so RH7.1 will probably be good :)

RH7 no good? So 6.2 is good, 6.0 and 7.0 suck? :Q

I have Mandrake 6, and I can't really say anything good about it. It's a pain in the ass to get the Banshee working properly, and impossible to get my internet working faster than 1KB/s, and actually 'working' (can't get anywhere).

So if I'm looking to get a new distribution, should I look for Mandrake 7 or what?

Thanks,

i used to be running redhat 6.2 on my system and found it to be very buggy and slow, but it was very easy to install. after trying slackware, corel, and debian, i gave up linux and tryed out FreeBSD 4.0. it was a very easy install, it can handle all linux binaries and i found to be twice as fast as any linux distro i used. to get full performance out of my machine and have my sound card work, i had to recompile the kernel specific to my system. its really not that hard to do and FreeBSD boots faster and uses less memory after you do it.

I'm using SuSe Linux 6.3 and I like it! I'm planning to get myself 7.0 since that one is even better. I'd at least give SuSe a chance to prove itself... ;)

Well I want to make sure I'll be able to access the net in full. With my Mandrake 6 distro, I was able to connect, but I could not go anywhere. *sometimes* I could get to dogpile or google.com, but hardly ever - and I never connected above 37333 (V.90 still), as opposed to the 48000 I get in Winbloat 9x/2K.

Everything else worked fine though, that's the thing that gets to me... I liked using Linux, and I would have stuck to it if I could have browsed the web decently!

FreeBSD sounds interesting, maybe I'll look into that. Maybe I'll give Mandrake 7 a shot, but after using 6, I'm kinda wary about it.
