Whats the best Johnny Walker?

My bro is a big scotch drinker....he poured me a glass of blue label last weekend and it was very good.

It was the best of everything he let me try....black, green and 2 others I don't remember the names.

Thats important to me cuz I'm a wuss and cant handle rough, grainy liquor. My first real drinking was in the islands with fruity rum like St Maartens Guavaberry.
I only drink the smooth stuff. It gives me no pleasure or ego to choke down harsh booze, especially cheap whiskey.

Get Black Bush Irish. For Johnnie Walker, Black is the best bang/buck. It's also my drink of choice in under stocked bars. I prefer it to Glenlivet.

I agree Black is a good value. Red is garbage, at that price point Dewars is much better IMO. I do prefer Glenlivet to Black however.

Sure they're both whiskey's, they're also both drinks. Maybe we should start discussing whether coca cola is better than whiskey? 🙄

This thread is about Johnny Walker. To start suggesting the OP should instead be drinking Bourbon, Sprite, or Drano because they're cheaper is pretty retarded. Almost as retarded as the people who seem to think the only difference between Scotch and Bourbon is the price. Forget about that fact that I have bottles of Bourbon that cost several times what a bottle of Black Label costs, but the tastes are vastly different.

I agree with the latter point, but it still doesn't explain why you used such strange terminology when complaining about this. I suspect you actually did not know that Scotch was a form of whiskey or that you just poorly phrased your point. Maybe you meant to say "other types of whisky" instead of "whisky" but, as you phrased it, your post made no sense.

The equivalent would be, "Why you bringing alcoholic beverages to a Scotch thread?" ... makes no sense.

Just had Red for the first time. Not good. It costs about $5 more than stuff like Black Bottle and is about a million times worse.

How did the black compare to green?

I liked the black as well. It just had a more "in your face" taste as opposed to the green's smoothness.

edit: got confused. I didn't like the green. The above post was black vs blue. From what I remember the green was the roughest

Cool, thanks for the input. I'll stick with black then. And yes blue is incredibly oily/smooth but can't really afford that. 🙂

I felt like picking up something new tonight, and lo and behold, the package store I went into had a bottle of Double Black.

First, I have to say that this is only my second Scotch, with the only one I've tried before this being Glenlivet 12yr.

Double Black is quite smokey in comparison, but actually very smooth. I like the "brighter" taste of the Glenlivet, but at least the 12yr has a decent bite that I don't enjoy some of the time.

Overall, I like it. This bottle will probably last a LONG time, but it's something nice to bring out for a relaxing evening or special occasion from time to time. 🙂 It was comparitively cheap too, $40 or so for 750ml.

I finally had a shot of the single black at my local bar. was not impressed. Blue or Gold would need to be considerably better for me to enjoy myself.
Though I will say it was smoother than Jack or Jim.

It's not JW, but my current favorite 'cheap scotch' is Balvenie Caribbean or doublewood.

Yeah, I just tried both Balvenies last year and still thought the JW Black was better for some reason. The B tasted mediciny to me.

i like the double wood. had a nice honeyed flavor to it. op should get laphroiag cask strength :awe:

If you guys get a chance, you should try the Balvenie 10yr Founders Reserve. It's no longer in production, but some stores still have it lying around. It's about $32-35, so it's a few bucks cheaper than the $36-40 the 12yr Doublewood costs.

The Founders Reserve has a bit more honey/citrus taste (though is no sweeter), and less of the iodine. Smoke/peat is roughly the same or just a hair less, and is slightly smoother.

Great stuff for the money.

If you want to go upstream, the 21yr Portwood is simply awesome. Balvenie raised the price to close to $200, but if you look around, some liquor stores still have the old price ($100-120 or so). My favorite whisky by far. 🙂

!!!

Shite, the price really jumped on that. I think I paid about $80, but that was years ago.

Shorty if you want a good cheap priced whiskey try Basil Hayden's or Crown is good.
Basil Hayden is cheap? It's not as cheap as corner creek reserve, which is as good or better imo. Woodford reserve is also delicious. Buffalo Trace is candy as well.

Crown is shit, I can never trust your opinion again.

You are asking opinions on good whiskey, Crown is conisidered a good one for the price. Also, I hope your "shot" of whiskey wasn't taken as one.

Like all alcohol, whiskey is an acquired taste. You might not like anything until the plus +$100 bottle range.

My staple with mixed drinks is crown or Jack, Basil Hayden if the place has it. Here BH is the same price or cheaper than Jack.

The best Johnnie Walker is called “Oban."

OMG, I thought I was the only one here on ATOT to have ever enjoyed that Elixir Of The Gods, otherwise known as Oban. I have mentioned it before in other Scotch threads, but no one else seemed to have tried it. Hard to find in my experience, but I have not drank for the past couple of years due to some medication I need.

I've had it, but I can't remember a thing about it. I may even have a bottle. I suppose I should go look. I was thinking earlier a glass of whisky would be nice.

Edit:
Turns out I didn't have any. I wanted something sweet, so I went with Black Bush. It was between that and Bowmore.
