Whats the best HD of the two????

Im trying to decide between Maxtor and WD.
I want which ever is faster and so on.

Maxtor 80gb 7200rpm 8mb ATA/133
vs
WD 80gb 7200rpm 8mb ATA/100

By the specs, I would assume the Maxtor to be the faster drive....is this so?

the WD 80gig 8MB is a very good drive. when it was released, many sites said it's performance is top notch.

Well it doesn't matter if the drives are ATA100 or ATA133. The peak bandwidth of either drive never goes above 80mb's anyway.
The ATA133 spec is nothing more than smoke and mirrors.
The SATA interface though after time ( the second standard) supposedly will exceed this.

The question is drive warrenty and the quietness of the drives.
The WD has a 3 year warrenty, I'm not sure about the Maxtor.
I do know that I had a WD SE drive that did fail, but it was replaced in 3 days. That's great.

tru da, SilverBack. All drives will fail, usally cause somebody like me deletes the MBR playing with the partitions.
Maxtor has bitchy propriety utilities, but ive never had a problem with um. IBM hitachi have been really good to me. Good 120gxp drives can be found for like 60 on pricewatch.

Maxtor's utility is just like the Seagate's except branded differently. I like MaxBlast even if I'm working with another brand's drive. Data Lifeguard from WD, OTOH, I didn't like. I couldn't even find out how to format using the tool...don't ask me 😀

The only benefit is if you're running a RAID setup.

If the Maxtor is a 6Y080P0 then it is likely the better choice. I have one of these running at just over 50 Mhz PCI without a hitch, for over a year. The WD gave up the ghost in less than a week (replaced under warranty though).

As far as RAID is concerned the same applies.
ATA100 or ATA133 still aren't peaked for either drive.
You have to remember that the drives being "blended" (lack of a better word) together still will never reach thier theorhetical output.
The limiting factor isn't the drives, but the bus.

Deleting the MBR will not make a drive fail. You just have to fdisk/mbr on 98, or use XP/2000 to delete and crwate a new partition.

On topic, Maxtor would be my choice.

Buy whatever one you want. The Maxtor will be quieter, but the WD may develop a high-pitched whine. Look at the warranties and benchmarks and decide for yourself. I've got the Maxtor drive (2MB cache) and it's been fine since I replaced my PSU (cheap POS killed 5 drives in 3 years).

i have 2 wd 80gb se's and they're running fine....quiet too. i have more noise from my 7 case fans and cpu fan...wonder why that is

You can do your own head to head comparison of the drives at Storage Review. The Maxtor 160GB drive is faster than the WD 80GB in most situations. I know, it's not a perfect comparison, but you can play around a little bit and use the 1200JB instead, or something, to make things more equal. Make sure you take price and warranty into consideration as well. I might be willing to give up 10% performance for an additional 2 years of warranty. I wouldn't do that for most hardware, but hard drives have a tendancy to fail more than most hardware.

Good way of thinking about it. If you aren't going to OC the drive, then the best warrantee v. performance v. cost may be the way to go.

Well I purchased the Maxtor Diamond Plus 9 160gb 7200 8mb ATA133 3yr Warranty after some careful consideration and all your tips.
Over all speed is the main thing but I'd also like quiet which Maxtor seems to have also.

Western Digital would be my pick. I had 4 Maxtors and all 4 went bad within one year.

I say WD too. I've had 3 WD drives, all are speedy and still operating.

I've had 2 maxtor drives. One died just after the warranty expired, and the other gives me an "imminent hard drive failure" message on POST, but still runs.
