I heard the 770 was a good option too? Or am I mistaken?

The best single GPU cards are probably EVGA Classified 780, Galaxy HOF 780 and Titan.

770 is one of the worst options on the market now when 1.05ghz 7970 cards with 3 free games are $300 but 770 2GB-4GB are $390-450.

Without breaking your wallet completely, I'd say GTX760 MSI Gaming SLI is an excellent choice too.

How much VRAM on the 7970? And where can I find this deal?

if you dont even know how much vram is on the 7970 then I think you need to do some basic research. also do you even have a decent pc to put any of these cards in because you seem like you are not in the loop at all as for as hardware goes.

HD7950/7970/7970GE generally ship with 3GB of VRAM.

Here is the deal on the MSI 7970 1.05ghz for $300. You can try the Visa promo code VME10BTS for another 10% off by August 26th.

* I agree with Toyota that upgrading to such level cards assumes you already have at least a Core i5 750 @ 3.9ghz, Core i7 860 @ 3.9ghz or something more modern like i5-2400/2500 or faster. I wouldn't pair this card with say Phenom II X4 955-965 for instance. Also, if you are only gaming at 1680x1050, it's better to get a $200 HD7950.

$1.5k?! D:

That will last, what 10+ years? D: D: D: D:
Diminishing returns and enthusiasts.

Those insane prices are for people that are either so rich or so fantatical / enthusiastic / crazy that they don't mind that they are paying big premium.

If you want relatively strong gaming graphic card, but you want have relatively good performance / $ ratio then look at cards like HD 7950, GTX 770 or similar. Eventually wait till new AMD Radeons release this fall / early winter.

With the recent AMD drivers bringing crossfire microstutter down to playable levels, 7950 3GB crossfire with OC to 1050-1150Mhz is quite easily the best value high performance setup for 1080p@120hz or 1440p gaming.

I don't understand how this "best of the best" thread suddenly turned into "best value" thread :)

Because op started talking about the 770 indicating he didn't actually mean best. Poss he was just attempting to start a flame thread. ;)

Fortunately for the OP, he has been provided with the best price/performance cards and the fastest cards in the same thread. Now it's up to him to do his research and decide what GPU goes best with his upgrade path, budget and existing PC components/game selection. But ya, it doesn't seem he was looking to spend $700-1K on a GPU.

My point precisely

Nvidia has not totally fixed microstuttering on your dual GPU setups. It have better 125% better deltas against paced crossfire setups on average. This is not perfect.

Think you need to do some research, if you are only gaming on 720p then a HD 7850 1GB will do everything you want. If you are gaming at 1440p then a HD 7970 will do everything you want, it depends on what you are asking, and don't buy something to try and futureproof yourself, it is better to be cheap and upgrade more often.

You asked for "the best". Did you think the best would be affordable?

Is the best car affordable?
Is the best PC affordable?
Is the best TV affordable?

I'm really surprised that you are surprised.

"best" and "affordable" is relative. I know people who think a Sony 4K tv at $5k is affordable. Not that they bought one since there is limited content, but they don't claim it to be "unaffordable". They use the term "expensive".

Until AMD has completely fixed microstutter in Crossfire setups, I don't think it's yet justified to consider any dual gpu Radeon card as candidate for 'best' card out there. Maybe eventually (maybe even soon) but not today

-_-

sigh.....this again. as an owner of two hd 7970's since launch, and as someone who has used radeon pro with fps limiter since that same time, i can say that i have never once had any issues with stuttering or anything of the like. and with the lastest frame pacing drivers, playing without radeon pro and the fps limiter has, again, yielded absolutely no discernible stuttering whatsoever. i came from sli 570's, btw. crossfire on amd is fine.

p.s.

"microstutter" exist on both nvidia sli and amd crossfire. neither company has managed to completely eliminate it.

sorry but its proven over and over again that AMD was way worse with crossfire than nvidia with sli. even to the point where single card could actually give the perception of more fps in some games than using two cards. and the frame pacing is not a cure all as it does not even fix DX9 games which are still the vast majority.

Well, I'm not actually looking to buy the best graphics card. This question just spawned out of pure curiosity

I own a 7970...used to own two. Microstutter sucked. Yes RadeonPro mitigated it...to an extent. Not to a sufficient extent, however. Stutter was still there to an extent that made CF seem pathetic compared to the single 7970 alternative that I now run. This was before 13.8 Beta, of course, but even that has limitations and bugs still being smoothed out

Edit: I write this to say that I won't deny your experiences if you grant me the same courtesy

Don't you think your curiosity would've been sated by simply looking at a recent GPU benchmark? Instead you chose to make a thread that's essentially pointless and prompted quite a lot of people to spend their time helping you with what they assumed was a legitimate problem.

So what you're looking for is best bang for the buck in the top.

Then GTX 770 or 7970 Ghz or if you want to shell more the GTX 780.
