antivir++

if it just wouldnt have that dumb pop-up everytime.

And i tried 'em all, NAV, Panda, AVG, Kasperksy...you name it.

Antivir has a pretty decent detecion rate and is far less resource hungry than most others.

I got about seven different vira in half an hour trying to find a file for my parents computer running no antivirus. Granted it was without anything but sp1.

I'm a big fan of avast, if only because antivir's site is always down for me, and the updates seem to fail a lot.

Curious about this myself.

It scans it before executing, so you have real time protection that will stop it from executing but it does not scan it while it comes in.

You guys using these free virus programs. How do they stack up? My Norton sub is only good for another couple of weeks, and the latest verson doesn't get the greatest reviews.

Are you guys just throwing caution to the wind, and just being cheap, or do the freebies hold their own? Can someone point me to recent reviews that cover the latest versions?

If you are using Norton you're throwing caution to the wind.
AVG is good. The reason the detection rate is a little lower than some is because of the way it handles e-mail viruses.
Personally I like panda. It's free for me as well.

Norton finishes higher than all verisons of Panda in that second link:p They don't do Panda in the first link, but Norton finshes second. Caution to the wind, I think not!

AVG isn't even the top rated free program, so if you wanna talk about throwing caution to the wind, start there.

As with spyware, it's a good idea to use two. I have AVG installed, and occasionally head over to www.trendmicro.com for a free scan (Housecall).

I used to use Panda's online scan along with Norton, but it got old. I still use it for people like my brother, who don't use anything.

He's infected now with something. His hard drive won't save anything. You can install a program, but once you reboot, it's gone. I scanned it with Panda, but it didn't find anything. I was going to reinstall XP, but he misplaced the CD when he moved. Maybe I'll have him try trendmicro.

Well, I just downloaded Kaspersky, and had problems right of the bat.:| Seems it doesn't get along well with sygate, or most other software firewalls.

Anti-Vir for me...

Norton has good detection, but rarely gets rid of the problem on-hand. Usually requires you to download a fix from their website.

AVG is pretty good too, but I hate their update system (it's like nearly everyday that I have to restart my computer for an update)
