FF3 (US) is still my favorite. Great music score, great story, great characters, great interface, great graphics (for the time). I remember getting that game after playing FF1, FF2, FF Mystic Quest (sucked), and thinking, oh...my....God.... it doesn't get any better than this. I was right, of course ;) Still my favorite all time game, period.

My favorite FF would probably be FF2 but I'm serious when I say that Chrono Trigger is better than all of them. The main reason being the lack of random encounters. I try to go back and play those games again but have so much trouble thanks to the walking along, randomly get attacked, walking along, randomly get attacked, etc. gameplay.

We call them FF6 and FF4 instead of FF3 and FF2 because there are NES games with the same names. Usually people label it as FF3a, FF3u, or FF3e (American, US, or English).

Interestingly enough, FF Mystic quest was created by Square specifically for US gamers.

Originally FFV was going to be the USFFIII. However, Square and Nintendo thought it was 'too hardcore', so they decided to wait until FFVI was released to localize it as FFIII.

In the meantime, they released FF Mystic Quest as 'My first retarded Final Fantasy' in America. :|

In fact FFIV was also somewhat dumbed down (easier bosses, some items were gone, many special attacks removed) and the 'original' version was not released until they resold it for PS1

I'm glad these kind of attitude has changed a bit in the last years and the US versions are basically identical gameplaywise to the Japanese versions.

FF7 was  Though by today's standards the graphics are a bit dated. And Noema, I played them starting with FFI on the original NES. While 1-3 US were great, 7 still took the cake.

FF6, FF4, FF7, FFT, FF9, FF5, FF11, FF8, FF10, FF10-2

I think that is how I'd rank them. I don't think it would be fair to use any of the ones earlier than FF4 since it is very hard to compare them, they are extremely basic but not necessarily bad games.

Yeah, I started with FF4 when it was released in the States, but FF7 ranks high above all others in my opinion. Kefka sucked, so I didn't care for quite a lot of FF6. I liked it very much, but anything to do with Kefka was blaaaaah.

It's such a loaded question. Almost all[1] of them have their moments - heck, even FF8 was a good game. I'll level and say that I didn't like the first one - it was just way too hard. I believe the re-releases may have toned down the difficulty some, though. For the best, I'll go with FF6 - FF7 was excellent, but it just didn't develop the characters and setting as well. FFX does better, IMHO.

[1] I still have Mystic Quest. Ick. They should re-release it as some kind of belated punishment for releasing it in the first place.

Why did you rank FF10 so low?

My ranking would probably be: FF6, FF4, FFT, FF7, FF9, FF10, FF5, FF8, FF10-2

I left out FF11 as I've never played it and thus can't comment on how good or bad it is.

6&7 are both great in my book, but I have yet to play earlier ones (planning on playing 5 soon, in FF Anthologies). I didn't really like 8&9 very much, X was good, haven't played X2.

I really hate to disappoint everyone, but I hated FF7. I really, really, really did. I didn't much care for FF6 either.

FF7 was a great game and at the time it came out I loved it. FF8 and FF9 I couldn't get into for some reason, I played most of FF8 but eventually got fed up with it the card game and magic system bugged me and the story wasn't as compelling as FF7. By the time I got FF9 I was bored with the FF series and it seemed like just more of the same. After that I sort of gave up on them and wandered off to other RPG games. I just started playing FF3/6 and so far it's fun but I still hate random battles. I also played FFMQ a looong time ago and it was entertaining but not very hard and no where near a classic. Chrono Trigger is by far my all time favorite RPG.

I have played FF2, FF3, and FF7, and I loved them all. They were by far the best RPG out on a console in their respective era.

I bought a Voodoo2 card just to play FF7 for PC.

I couldn't get into FF past 7.

Well, although FF10 was damn low on my list, I still enjoyed it, which really says a lot about the list itself. But the hero was annoying and that put it lower on the list for me. It was the one FF game where the plot really intruded on my own enjoyment of the game. Plus I actually completed the 200 lightning dodge mini-game and am permanently scarred because of it.
