What's the best email client?

I'm at work and I have Netscape v6.2 installed, so I have their email client, Messenger, running. But this thing takes a TON of memory and other system resources, and I have a crappy system here. Besides that, in true (recent) Netscape fashion, it keeps crapping out. Mind you, Microsoft's Outlook XP (at home) also craps out some, too. So the question is...

Is there some good (preferably free) email client out there that actually knows how to manage system resources efficiently? I check multiple IMAP email accounts, so something like Outlook Express wouldn't work. Is there some program out there for this poor soul running on a 366MHz (seriously 🙁)?

Names or links are much appreciated! Thanks! 😀

UPDATE: It seems Outlook Express DOES do multiple email accounts. Excellent! But before gopunk pointed that out, I'd gone through a bunch of different software, and have to recommend Mozilla v0.9.8. It rocks! 😀

I actually still use Outlook at home 😱

God only knows why, I really need to look at something better!

I still use Outlook at home, and it's not that bad, but I can't do that at work, for legal reasons.

As for Eudora, it can't handle multiple email accounts, so that's out. Netscape is all I've found in the "mainstream," but maybe some of you know some obscure program for Windows that will work just as well (and use less resources).

The hunt continues...

Yes it can. You just have to add them under "profiles." I thought the same thing for a while until I figured that out.

Outlook XP is not bad at all .. just be more careful with attachments and you will have one great email client.

i need something that looks like outlook express, has multiple account support that automatically puts incoming mail in their own inboxes, and that is very easy to backup and restore. and free. hehe. so far outlook express is what i use.. don't really like it.. but i haven't found a good replacement.

The attachments isn't the problem. It's that I'm not allowed to install a Microsoft product in my work PC unless I have management purchase a license for me. They won't.

But let me check out Eudora once more. 🙂

I wholeheartedly recommend FoxMail . It was written by a Chinese guy, so it even comes with some small syntactical errors. 🙂

Anyway, it retains Outlook's functionality, and it is VERY small and fast (both the download, as well as the program & email notifier programs): the download is 568K.

Okay, so if you like the Outlook and/or Netscape Messenger interface for checking your mail, then I STRONGLY suggest you check out Mozilla. Mozilla is Netscape without all the AOL-ism frills (or, said another way, Netscape is Mozilla with a bunch of crap bundled in it). Mozilla is lightweight in terms of resources and it's more stable than Netscape. I've been using it today so far without incident. Anyway, just thought you guys might want to check it out. --oh, and by the way, it also has a web browser. 😛

Enjoy! 😀

yes it will, just set up another account. outlook express can check hotmail, pop3, and imap, and multiple instances of each.

unless there's something i'm missing here, i'm surprised nobody else pointed this out.

gotta put my props to Pine... nothing quite like text-only email over SSH.

Attachments? FTP, or copy them to the web directory to view pics or whatever.

Okay, so I'm in the dark ages... but it's more fun that way! And no virus problems! And my SSH client takes up a whopping 3MB of RAM, no matter how much email I get!

And no, I'm not using lynx to view this web page 😛

HOLY CRAP! That has to be some new (recent) functionality, because I remember specifically NOT being able to do that before. But I guess that was a long time ago. Hmm... I guess I gotta give MS some credit there. Although, at least this hunt led me to Mozilla, which is working beautifully. It can do more than Outlook Express anyway, but this is good to know nonetheless.

Yeah, me too. And I'm surprised that I didn't know about this before. I feel like some soccer-playing kid at the end of a G.I. Joe cartoon hearing Quick Kick tell me "and knowing is half the battle!" 😀

I use Outlook XP for the calendar, email, tasks, and of course contacts (for my palm also..) I love it.

Pine is what I primarily use, it's got a great mix of features and ease of use 😉 But if I had to reccomend a client with a GUI, I'd say Eudora, the older versions are better though, they're less "bubbly" in appearance

is the email client for mozilla less resourceful than OE? I should take a look.. i'd just use mozilla.. but it sucks up 40MB of ram... and IE is so conveniently built in xp... mozilla tends to crash a bit on me still... but it's gettin there.

Does anyone know for sure which email client meets the following criteria:

a) Built in spell checker
b) Newsgroup support.

Eudora doesn't have newsgroup support, but it has a spell checker.
Outlook Express has newsgroup support but not a built in spell checker.

Someone suggested Mozzila. Is that true? Does it fit the above criteria?
(I also heard Mozzila has a built in web browser, unfortunately I don't need yet one more browser at this time).

Thanks
