What's the best computer monitor for 1080p blu ray viewing?

I've been looking into building a new computer.

A big function would be watching blu rays.

There are tons of $100 22 inch monitors out there, but which ones of those are best for movies?

Like, since most blu rays actually run letter-boxed on 1080p displays, would it then make sense that a 1200 vertical resolution is best? So a 1080p blu ray can run full 1080p even while letterboxed?

First thing, get an IPS panel. A TN panel would be horrific for colors and viewing angles.

Second, 1920x1200 is better imo, because you have room for subtitles/controls at the bottom without overlapping a 1.77:1 movie (there are many even though 2.35:1 is most common)

Well, it has a backlight, so there will always be black level concerns. Right now, Samsung is making 7" AMOLED screens at scale, so maybe in a year or two, we'll be seeing some affordable 22"-24" AMOLED panels that should give IPS a good run for its money.

IPS will have better blacks than TN panel LCDs. Its not perfect but it looks fine on mine. Response time is good too. Then again mine was 3x your budget on sale.

You will pay more for IPS panels.

Actually IPS is considerably worse than TN for black levels. We are talking about 0.1 - 0.3 cd/m^2, depending on the backlight level.

I stand corrected, subjectively I feel my new IPS has better blacks than my old TN. I guess I shouldn't have made a blanket statement. I also truely feel that an IPS panel will give you a better over all picture.
