What's the BEST chipset cooler & where are they??

I'm sure whatever is best for one will be good for both.

I think the advantage with some of the chipset ones
is that they will have the holes drilled and will line up.(Usually)

But if I'm going to lap one, I want it to be the best one I can get, that will fit.

Any thoughts on the ol' 486 CPUcoolers that had the fan built in???

I have a few of those here, just no holes in them....yet.

The blue orb sucks. If you really want one I'll send you one for the cost of shipping. I got one to cool my GeForce2, and found that, among other things, the bottom wasn't flat, and the standoffs were made of such thin metal that they wouldn't hold the fan flat against the chip (they would bend.)

I still have not found a reasonably priced (I don't consider $12.00+ reasonably priced for this simple item) _and_ well made chipset HSF. The vantec fan is good but expensive. You can find them at plycon.

Well, because A) I shouldn't have to, and B) it's BENT, so lapping wouldn't necessarily fix the problem.

The problem with the blorb is that the metal they use is too thin, and too easily bendable. you can bend the standoffs (which are part of the bottom) with your fingers. Boooooo.

the blue orb sucks...I can't remember where I saw it, but the thermal transfer is done between a peice of pressed metal..they mounted the fins to a copper plate just to make it work.

cheaply made POS if you ask me that prolly cools worse than the stock cooler.

Using MSI Board,put an old Socket-5 fan on it,works fine,and
I got plenty of spares too.(Chipset already has Heatsink)

A) You have to lap many quality heatsinks. Just because they have manufacturing defects doesn't make them bad products.
B) Ok, I agree with you on that one.

You know....I was thinking that the BLorb was junk because of the perf of the CPU variety from the same company.

But I never had one b4...thx for the heads up guys.

As for the lapping, I lap all of my heatsinks anyway...so no big deal there.
But as for the bending...well that defeats all the lapping in the world, so no go.

486 or original Pentium HSF??????

I may try to take the HSF off of the chipset and use it as a stencil to mark an ol' 486 heatsink,
drill out the holes there and try it...it won't bend.

Any reason not to??

yeah blueorb sucks...2cooltek sells a copper chipset heatsink, i saw a review of it on gideontech, it cools much better than blueorb, and only costs $14

for the best chipset cooler get a socket 7 heatsink/fan combo and lap it, then ASepoxy it to the chipset. a socket7 heatsink will beat any chipset cooler out there besides water cooled or peltier
