Lite-On seems to be the norm around here.....great performance and you can't beat 48x24x48 for $52.99 at Newegg.

Yamaha. But its on the pricey side. Bang/buck, Lite-on but they tend to be noisy. LG drives are solid, quiet and have 8mb buffers (some models).

Uhh, LiteOn 52x52x52 for $50 or even $15 (Memorex, Cendyne or other REBRANDED Lite-Ones) is available - check the Hot Deals.

Lite-on is pretty much becoming a standard, due to the fact that they are cheap costing drives, but work extremely well and do what they're supposed to.... so what if they're kind of noisy (my 24x one is noisy, but hell, if you want to have a nice system then you're going to have to give up this freakish idea that everything will be silent)

And Nero is leaps and bounds above EZ Cd Creator... at least that's how I feel

liteon....some people will say a plextor is the best, but damned expensive, i dont see a reason not to get a liteon, especially considering you can get a rebadged one for next to nothing in the hot deals forum, theres gotta be a handful a month that are available, i got a buslink/liteon

80 at buy.com, 50 bucks in rebates, 48x12x48

works like a pro

Yamaha drives aren't necessarily more reliable or faster than the competition, but they usually include features that other manufacturers aren't offering (Disc t@2, High-quality audio CDs).

Lite-On drives are very reliable and fast. However, their best feature is their super-low cost. I rarely see anyone on these forums recommend anything but Lite-On.

Personally, I cant stand nosiey CD/RW's. I'd go with Asus, (not their lastest model) or Samsung. Plextor does make solid drives though.

toshiba or plextor...except they cost $$$ and are probably not worth getting since liteons deliver similar performance for cheaper

IMO, the top brands are Plextor, Teac, Ricoh and Asus - Yamaha built good drives too, but they've gone all hollywood lately (style over substance). They all are built very solidly. I'm still using my Plextor 4220 SCSI burner after about 3 or 4 years. I doubt many of the LiteOns et al. are going to hold up that long. Ricoh stopped selling in the States, but some packager has started importing their drives directly and you can sometimes get them from www.hypermicro.com, who also import directly.
. Most of us like Nero over Roxio, but Roxio's Direct CD has more functionality than the equivalent from Nero. It formats on the fly (you have to pre-format your CDRWs w/ InCD) and can use both CDR and CDRW media (InCD uses only RW media). So if you use packet writing a lot and want the most convenient use Roxio. It was possible to have both installed, but I don't think that's possible with WinXP. If you're using an older version of Win, then look on www.nero.com for the info. I like to always have both on hand (actually as many as possible ;) - B's Gold et al.)...

In my experience the best have been Plextor, Yamaha and Ricoh. Thats if you are wanting the absolute best in reliability and quaility. However, LiteOn probably gives %90 to %95 of the performance/reliability for much less money. For pretty much any product you end up paying a large premium for getting that last %10 or so of quaility. You can get almost as good for less usually (LiteOn). But I personally have always used Yamaha and Plextor for my systems. Though my latest one is a Sony and its working very nicely. But its the only Sony I have used so I dont have a ton of experience with them.

I understand that the latest Sony (48x) is a rebadged LiteOn (from one of the review sites, cdrlabs) and can be flashed to 52x24x52 with one of the firmwares available on the web. I don't think Sony wouold put their name on junk...

Lite-On for everything, from reliability to performance to price.

It could be a little noisy because it burns really fast but it's not TOO loud.

Best bang for the buck, I would say Lite-on. I favor Plextors cause of the noise level but they are pricey. I only used Lite-on and Plextors, both are solid drives.

I have the Cedyne version of the Liteon 52xs on one of my rigs at home and a Liteon 48xs at work.

Never had problems with any of the Liteons I ever owned (4 or 5). My 52xs is DEFINATELY less noisey then my 48xs.

if you're trying to save some space you might want to check out the combo drives like the samsung sm-348B 48/24/48-16x cd-rw/dvd drive or the new LG 4480BI 48/24/48-16x cd-rw/dvd drive. I got the sm-348B and it's pretty good, there's a review at cdrlabs.com on the sm-348B. I haven't found any reviews on the LG 4480BI drive yet nor do I know if it has a 8MB buffer like the samsung combo but you can buy the retail LG drive for $89 at mwave.

I know this might seem a little OT but has anyone tried to flash their LiteOns to be faster (for example flash their 48/16/48 to burn @ 52 instead or etc, etc...
Does it work? Stable?
