what's the best CD-RW external drive for under $400?

as the subject says, I'm looking for a good deal on a CD-RW drive, and would prefer compatible with mac and PC as I have both. I've tried zdnet and a few other review sites, but there are just so many variables. I'm a novice at recording sound. I want something userfriendly, fast and re-recordable. and fairly cheap. Gee, I want a lot don't I?

well the best external recorder is the Yamaha 2100 CDRW drive. it's insanely fast, has a large buffer (8mb), and supports Firewire, and SCSI (internal and external).

as for the user friendliness.. I don't know, depends on your knowledge of computers!

soccerman, thanks for the advice, know where I could get one in the USA? No store online seems to carry the Yamaha drives...

they are brand new.. they were just announced! you might have to wait a few days for them.

if I didn't help, at least I gave you a bump for more knowledgeable people to read this!

I'd go for a Yamaha. They have external FireWire or SCSI.
They have the 8824 series now (8x) and the 2100 series soon (16x).
Do you have firewire or SCSI on both your Mac and your PC?

If not..I guess you have to go for USB...*shudders*... HP makes the best USB CDRW I've seen thus far, but USB is pretty bad for CDRWs..

i got a 8x4x24 external yamaha scsi burner a few days back...it was in hot deals for 169!! but was like 199 at compusa or something..

but it's a phat drive!!!

just kinda loud when the comp is off
Solution: dont turn the comp off (those 4 case fans cover the noise up!).

This is what I did. Buy a brand new Plextor SCSi burner and went on EGAY and find an old Plextor external cdrom like a 4x or 6x. It usually runs about $10. Now get the enclosure and sell the drives for $5. Now you have nice external scsi drives.
