Whats the best antivirus software?

Norton is about the worst I have used. McAfee works well, and surprisingly there is a free version from AVG that rates well.

I find Norton 2k2 and above to be good, and McAfee is fine also, why do you not like norton dnuggett?

I have Norton I don't know how others compare because I havn't used them. If I were you I would try the free one from AVG and see how it does.

I do not like Norton because it failed to catch 4 virus codes that Mc caught over the 6 months that I used it. I also despise the uninstall process that comes with System Works, so that Mc can clean up the mess Norton left behind.

AVG. You can run it without the control panel or email scanner, and it's almost transparent. Only uses 1.5mb of my ram.

Norton just went below my radar screen because of product Activation. I have used McAfee since it was shareware in 1984, and have never found it lacking. Plus I like the regular weekly DAT updates every Wednesday afternoon.

Norton programs, no matter what they were have always caused problems on every system I've ever seen them installed on. I won't touch Norton Products.

I use InoculateIT at work. Still running on version 6.0 but its awesome. Auto updates so I don't have to babysit the antivirus signature site. I can scan my network to see which PC's are on and off, what signature version they're running, what OS they are, etc. Can also define "Organizational Units" with pre-defined "profiles". For example if I install it on a server, I can drop that server into my "Signature Servers" OU and suddenly its avaialble for signature downloads to other PC's. Alternately, if its a end user I can drop them into the "unable to modify their own settings" OU so they can't disable their antivirus. In about 2 years of running InoculateIT only 2 "viruses" have attacked my company. And they weren't really "viruses". The first one was one of those emails that provides a link to a site on the web and the user was a corporate boss so he had admin rights to install what he didn't know was spyware. Would have been prevented if he didn't have admin rights. The 2nd was that ms blaster worm, which was because some users weren't up to date on their service packs. Overall it's performed great. Of course, this is from a corporate review standpoint. I understand they make something for end users, it might be worth checking out.

I've had horrible uninstall experiences with both Mcafee and Norton.

I didn't have any with Mc cause I didn't need to uninstall it... it works much better. 😉

I just run a monthly scan from the housecall.antivirus.com site, practice safe browsing habits, and have a hardware NAT firewall.

And to date, I've only had one virus... which was removed easily.

About every three months I try the one on Symantec's site.
