I have been using the FilterQueen Defender for years. It is a medical grade air cleaner that has been extremely helpful with asthma and allergies in the family.

Back before Christmas, these went down to $120 on Walmart.com:

I picked up 2 of them to run on opposite ends of my house. There's an air quality light that changes from Blue to Purple to Red depending on air quality. It's a 4 stage filter with ionizer and we can tell a difference when we run them. When the air quality detection drops, the fan increases speed automatically. We notice when we're cooking in the house and browning meat or vegetables in oil that it really works to clean the air up. We also notice that they sometimes come on and we don't know why.....but we know it's detecting dust or something in the air that we can't see.

Filters for these can be picked up for $25-30 and reviews are pretty good. There's another similar model (1512h or something like that..) for a similar price. They're about the same size. Don't bother with the smaller units. They just don't move enough air to really be effective if you ask me. For these, they suggest cleaning the washable pre-filter every 2 weeks. There's a charcoal filter behind that and then the hepa filter. Inside the unit is an air ionizer....(those are the 4 stages)
With Covid-19's effect on global supply chains, and huge demand from the Western wildfires, most air purifiers were all expensively priced until recently.

The Coway Airmega 200M has recently dropped back down to $119 on Walmart.com. This is the top-rated unit by The Wirecutter for combo of performance and low cost of operation (Consumer Reports has different recommendations). The main knock I would assign is they include just one carbon pre-filter in the box. The replacement cycle is 6 months, so they should have included 2 (along with the annual HEPA filter). I find that the Coway 3-speed fan is a bit louder than Winix's 4-speed fans.

Some of the aftermarket filter sets on Amazon include 4 pre-filters to 1 HEPA filter, which is more in-line with typical duty cycles for the pre-filters.

The carbon filter is just an odor filter. I've got 2 of those and actually rinsed them in the sink in the opposite direction of airflow to clean them. (even though the manual says not to) The prefilter screen catches lint, hair, dust....it's great and I clean those often.

I bought 3 Oreck small room hepa air cleaners for Christmas to go in the bed rooms. They have remotes and look ok, but are junky sounding. The fan has a rattle to it. These were certified refurbished for $33 and appear to be store demo models maybe. The filters were new and clean. I'll toss them if I can't find a cheap filter replacement when the time comes. I figure for $100/year for 3 rooms is decent if they collect anything.

The carbon filter is probably $1 cost to Coway (I bought a few from China, $3 each). They should have included one extra in the box.

As for the Orecks you bought, there is a wide variation in power consumption and effectiveness of air purifiers. The Coway 200M and similar Winix models rate quite well in both areas (except when running on the lowest fan setting).

Costco has had some Winix options and they come with replacement filters. I did not do the research into them but my sister who is very thorough in such health matters got them so I picked up two for my place. If you have a Costco membership figured that info might be useful.

The highly rated Coway Airmega 200M is back on sale at Walmart. Not the lowest all-time price, but close if you factor in raging inflation.
