Hi, I need to upgrade my ti4200 but I've been out of the loop for a while and was wondering if you guys tell me what the best video card right now is within 200 dollars price range? Prefferably NVidia, but ATI couldn't hurt either if I can check it out and then return if I'm not satisfied with drivers.

Tnx

6800GS is right on the $200 mark. Then there's the C3D ATi x800GTO that softmods to x850xtpe. Then there's the 6600GT/6800NU, hovering in the 100-150 range.

He's asking for AGP. 6800GS is only PCI-E. Only the PCI-E version of the x800GTO can be softmodded.

Which leaves the 6600GT and 6800nu, of the two I'd take (and did take) the 6800nu. Unfortunately prices have increased on those in the last two months, low price is around $170.

Bah, I thought 6800GS was AGP...

6600GT is only 130... berry good price. I'd recommend x800PRo refurb from ATi, but you never seem to find those anymore. Otherwise, there's really no good card for AGP unless you hike up your budget.

You didn't list your system specs, however,
A 6600GT or 6800NU would be a big performance leap over your ti4200

Right Now, it's 1600 Athlon XP. I was gonna order and put in 2500 or 3000 Mobile Athlon XP today and overclock it, but I just checked Newegg and to my surprise they are gone even from their web site :( The only Mobiles they have on their web site are Athlon 64s.

Thanx for all your suggestions everyone, I'm going to check all those cards out. One more question, does pci-e system really make that much of a difference in video games? I'm buying a new video card and CPU. Also my capacitors on my current EPOX board are blown, and at this point it will cost me about the same to replace it or repair it, so I'll replace it. Couple years ago I payed $120 for it, today it costs like $40. So $200 for video card + $100 for CPU, + $40 for replacement mobo. So this upgrade will cost me around $350. So my question is how much better would PCI-E system be with a video card that costs about the same? Would it be worth it to pay extra for pci-e mobo and a new generation CPU?

I'll read reviews for those cards tonight and run to Fry's in couple days I guess for CPU, video card, and mobo.

I would not switch to PCI-E just to switch to PCI-E since AGP is still perfectly viable, especially for mid-range video. However, if you are going to be replacing your motherboard and video card anyway, there really isn't any reason to NOT switch to PCI-E. The actual system itself won't be any faster than the same parts in AGP, but you'll be able to more easily upgrade to a higher end PCI-E card in the future if you decide to do so.

IMHO, If you're going to replace your Mobo anyway i would go with PCI-E. While there is no current performance advantage to PCI-E, you have more VidCard options. We just upgraded our main rig to a MSI Neo4F and a C3D X800GTO, then modded the GTO into a X800XL, all for a little over 2 c-notes. Much more bang for the buck then an AGP system.
Another PCI-E VidCard option not available in AGP is the 6800GS for right aroung $200. Just don't skimp on system memory, current games want memory, a lot of memory.

EDIT, a hint for you, check the Hot Deals and FS/FT forums here on AT for some good deals on your upgrade.

Since you're basically starting from scratch...go PCI-E all the way. No use messing around with AGP with a new build. I'd buy the video card last since there will most likely be some REALLY good deals on video cards over the next month or so.

Also...if you're willing to spend another ~$125, you could perhaps pickup the same mobo and video card in my profile IF they have the same deal going at Newegg when the mobo comes back into stock (~$350 for the mobo and video card). EVGA and Newegg has been running this deal "off and on" for the last couple of months. Check the hotdeals forum for more info.

Also, the retail AMD A64 3000+ goes for around $115-$125 these days and generally overclocks very well.

I agree, if you're upgrading CPU and VGA, go for PCI-E. It'll open up a lot more avenues for processors instead of being limited by your current socket, and from the looks of it the future of AGP is nil.
