What's the best Ad-blocking software?

Was using the ad-blocking feature in Norton Internet Security but was having issues (BSOD) with Opera browser. I need some type of ad-blocking software, I can't stand seeing ads. Any advise? Free or pay, I really don't care, I just want something that works well, is somewhat self configured and has low overhead (i.e.-doesn't slow down browsing). Thanks!

First you would copy/paste all that text into NOTEPAD then save it as HOSTS (without any extension).

Then locate any existing (original) hosts file on your computer:

Windows 95/98/Me= c:\windows\

Windows NT/2000= c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\
(you may need administrator access for Windows NT/2000)

I strongly suggest you rename your original HOSTS file to HOSTS.BAK. This way you can always go back...

After it's renamed, move the new HOSTS file to the same directory. Restart your browser, and your done :)

Note: Some antivirus apps might add a few lines to a HOSTS file, usually for POP.MAIL scans. Also, that HOSTS list I have on my site is rather LARGE and you might want to remove some of the AD sites. Since AnandTech uses a lot of 247media, you might consider it remove them. On some sites, if the AD is blocked, you might need to press the BACK button on the browser 2 or more times. This is due to the AD "loopback" function. I also try to keep my HOSTS file on my site updated (every month).

Thanks a lot DocDoo, that file worked fine.

It doesn't block all the ad's but it's better for me than installing some other software to handle it..

Cheers.:)

The host file is pretty convenient, I add images' originating server locations whenever I see em >8)

However, a common side affect is hitting the back button mutltiple times is required to go back (this can be a pain in the neck). My favorite ad blocking software titles are Webwasher and Proxomitron.

Correct, it's an ongoing battle to try to stay ahead of the ad's. Besides, I do not include Akamai since it can cause problems for most people. While there is a "Grand" list, you would not be happy with it.
