what's the best 60 gb 7200 rpm?

i'm considering 4 right now (in this order): western digital, seagate, ibm, and maxtor. the wd is gonna be pretty cheap, so that'd be a good reason to get that, the seagate is supposed to be ultra quiet, which is definitely a plus, the ibm is really fast, but i've heard that even the 60gxps are deathstars too, and i'd be ok with a maxtor (even though my last one died on me after only a year 🙁). how do these rate in terms of reliability, speed, sound? what'd be the best buy, if all prices were about the same (thanks to newegg, they are)? thanks much!

I would go with the IBM. I put one in a system for a friend and it works great. Probably not the quietest like the Seagate but the sound isnt really noticeable.

I've gotten 2 Western Digitals (a 40 gig 7200RPM drive and a 60 gig 7200RPM drve) both go bad on me after 6 months... however both of the drives I got back from western digital work tons better than the originals 🙂

Western Digitals are fast, and very quite... also just to let you know, mine didn't die instantly, they either developed bad errors where I could copy over my info or they slowly died... so it wasn't like I was screwed...

My maxtor drive, well that's been goin strong for a year (a 40 gig 5400RPM) It's a nice drive, and has been very reliable (used primarily as my data drive which was used like all the time)

I don't know about segate, so I wont comment...

IBM's have had way too many problems, I'd just suggest staying away...

Basically, I'd give western digital a shot if I was you... they are really nice drives...

I had a similar thread to this and found people seem to like them all. I did find IBM the least popular and Maxtor near the top. I am going w/ a Maxtor L series w/ fluid bearings. I want reliablity and that one is suppose to be quite as well. From what I have gathered Maxtor builds a reliable HD. Hope this helps and gl in your search 🙂.

well, i have a ibm 60gxp (60gb) and i've had it for about 2 months and i was loving it, till the last friday (2/22) it crashed! man i developed like 12mb worth of bad sectors... i reformatted it (which was a pain in the a$$ i might add) and i works okay again... but does anyone know if IBM will fix/replace my hard drive if i RMA it? i bought it from ebay and dont have any documentation of any kind... someone who's experienced in RMA-ing plz help me out.

In the last year I have have a WD, Seagate, and IBM drive die. No problem with several Maxtors. If I tell you this they will probably die this afternoon!!! RR

You don't need a proof of purchase for an IBM drive. They'll take it back as long as it's less than three years from the date of manufacture on the drive -- as long as the drive is from the same market as where you are located (i.e. a drive destined for denmark can not be RMA'ed in the US).

They have an online RMA form at www.storage.ibm.com and click Warranty.

It usually takes a while, and they replace your drive with a "serviceable used part" -- which sucks, but I guess it's better than a dead drive.

Does anyone know about the IBM 120GXP drives? You can get a 60gb version from newegg.com for just a little over $100 ($103 I think) I personally have a WD400BB (4ogb, 7200rpm, ATA100) and I have LOVED it. It has been running flawlessly for a year and t so stinking quiet. No, I have not heard, or rather, tried to hear a seagate or maxtor (besides my old 2gb, but that does not mean anything) so I don't have anything to compare my WD to, but all I know is that I can press my ear to the case and still not hear the drive when it is going.

My limited personal experience:

Seagate- One DOA in the box. Never had another but have known some users who swear by them.

WD- Had five over the past four years. Three died. Two within 18 months and one at 26 months. RMA on the first two was a snap... but it was still an RMA.

Maxtor- Have had six over the years and had one die after 24 months, but it was a spare and got knocked around a little more than the others.

No experience with IBM but have read the same good and bad stories.

I will always say it's a Ford vs. GM thing. Get a good one and you'll swear by it. Bet burned and you won't want another. Obviously, Maxtor would be my choice based on my experience. The 45g that I use most of the time now is actually very quiet IMO.

Good luck,

I use to be one of those who was able to say that their 60 GXP was running great with no problems until it died on me last night after 3 months. IBM obviously has a flawed product on their hands but continues to sell it to the unsuspecting public.

FWIW:

In the past year I have had

2 IBM 45GB 75GXPs
2 IBM 60GB 60GXPs
2 IBM 20GB 60GXPs
1 WD 80GB WD800BBRTL
1 WD 30GB WD300BBRTL

of Those

1 75GXP died withing 6 Months
1 20GB 60GXP Died within 3 Months
1 60GB 60GXP died within 11 Days

Not to good of a track record.

I personally prefer the Maxtor drives, though I don't really care too much. If you want quiet, buy the Seagate Barracuda IV series...they're basically the quietest IDE drives you can get.

As for reliability, I don't have any experience with IBM drives so I can't really comment on that. I know that with various Maxtor drives over the years, only one has ever failed on me, and that was only because I just HAD to window mod it and now it spins up but doesn't read data 😱

Why not check out storagereview.com and get the full picture.. The leaderboard there tells you the fastest drives in each category. Nearly always ibm at top, occaisionally replace by maxtor.

Used to swear by quantum fireballs. But since they're not really an option anymore have had 1 maxtor and 1 ibm. The Maxtor failed (and got replaced by a fujitsu..ulchh.. slow but works). no probs with ibm to date.

I like Maxtors... I have a 10gig in my Linux box which has been on 24/7 for the past 4 years, apart from the times when I had to take it down to hardware upgrades or moved dorm rooms and apartments.

I've got a Maxtor 60Gb now... works fine... runs 24/7 as my main drive.
My friend just got an IBM 60GB... seems to work just fine.. it's been about 4 months since he's got it... run 24/7.

Did I mention how I love Maxtors RMA policy!!
I had to use it on a 6.4GB drive that was real old (got it off Ebay)... RMA'd it and got a 20GB back from them... because I guess they don't make 6.4GB's anymore!! :-D
Sweetness,
Mer.

WOW...that is good to know about Maxtor. I may go ebaying to try and find one myself. Thanks a lot. Was torn on this issue but thinking I may go Maxtor and try to find L series w/ fluid bearings.

Ok, every computer Ive built in the past 5 years has had a Western Digital HD in them; of them all, only one Ive ever had a problem with that and that was because the person never actually used the Windows Shutdown instead just turned off the power. 🙂 Ive never seen that many bad sectors...hehe. ANyways, WD drives are pretty fast, fairly quiet and pretty cheap. I cant wait till I get the cash for their 120Gb JB series!

I would suggest you to go with Maxtor

I've tried IBM, WD, Quantumm, Maxtor, Seagate. I like Maxtor much better especially the L series one. I just installed one for my friend

I've been using an IBM 120GXP for 2-3 months so far w/ no problems. Hopefully their more reliable than the 75/60 GXPs. I used to always use Quantum Fireball Plus drives, and supposedly some of the Maxtor's are still Quantums (D740X).

Slightly off topic, I was told that HDD fans that are rigidly attached to the HDD can eventually cause problems with the drive. I've also read that putting a fan on an IBM can help reliability due to less heat. Anyone know more?
