how is that?

first i put some onions in the pot sliced up and some oil (like to coat the bottom) and i let the onions get soft and heat up.

then i put in the rice and i constantly stir it up while it is heating the rice all over for about 5-10 minutes till al lthe rice is slightly covered in oil and it is starting to brown slightly from the heat.

then i add in the water and keep the top off till it boils, then i put the top on it till the water has all steamed out.

i only use jasmine or long grain brown rice, but for brown rice i need to put water in like 3 times.

my (now) fiancee taught me this when i first met her and i have never cooked rice differently since. it tastes so much better than just steaming rice. i do not even like normal steamed rice because its so damn plain tasting.

and i think there is a name for cooking rice this way but im not sure what it is.

I don't see anything there that would preclude a rice cooker. I saute onions in mine and stir while it is cooking. I also have made soups where you add liquid at different stages.

I have a rice cooker that you just throw in the microwave. 1 cup of rice. 1.5 cups of water. Put it in for 11 mins and walk away.

Vitamin C is soluble in water ... boiling leaches out the Vitamin C.

Cheap too

I use one of those microwave ones (though not that specific one linked).

It's amazing. As said above, every cup of rice gets 1.5 cups of water. 15:00 min for me in the microwave and out comes perfectly cooked rice.

Convenience, pure and simple. You just measure the rice and water and press a button. Also, my new one uses a lot less electricity than the crappy stove in my apartment to do the same thing.

Rice cookers boil too. What's your point?

Cleaning rice is pretty common knowledge. However, I have seen people not clean it. Maybe uncle bens does not need to be cleaned. I have no idea.

you don't need a toaster...you can toast bread many ways!:p
if you eat rice often it turns rice cooking into a very fast very easy low aggravation chore. boiling over/burning etc not possible. you can even forget about it and the cooker will just keep it warm instead of totally causing a mess. its like clock work. its a time efficiency thing. and of course it keeps the rice warm better than any pot so it makes cooking more flexible.

Rice is a starch meant to supplement a main course or other ingredients. Your argument is like saying water sucks so I only drink iced tea.

Ahhh, so you eat your baked potatoes without ANY salt, pepper, butter or sour cream*, because they are "a starch meant to supplement a main course or other ingredients"?

Your argument is like saying water at a meal is a liquid meant to supplement a main course or other ingredients, so I would never have iced tea, a good beer, a nice wine, soda or milk.

See?

*Or, as I often do, squeezed fresh juice of a lemon with pepper.

Also, I never realized you were supposed to wash rice before cooking it. Is this common knowledge or something?

There is zero benefit in having one.
If you're too lazy to simply rinse rice, throw water in a pot with the rice in it, and go do something else for 25mins while it cooks, then get a rice cooker.

And WTF is up with people "stirring" their rice?

Depends on the rice he's making.
If it's just plain white rice, sure it's ok to use one.

If it's my culture's traditional jollof rice or fried rice, hell no.

We got a slow cooker/rice maker by Krups. It's great for all sorts of meals. People bash non 'asian' ones, but my wife loves it and she has only been in the US for 6 years now. All the rice is nice and fluffy (kokuho rose).

The term unrealistic comes to mind. Constantly stir for 10 minutes? Are you not cooking anything else while you're cooking your rice? I'm usually chopping something to cook up along with the rice while the rice and meat are cooking.

We use an Oster Rice Cooker purchased at Target and it works just fine.

Yeah, ten whole minutes for a superior result! What a waste! He could have been posting on OT that whole time. ;)
