What's the benefit of ECC RAM?

I've got 512mb worth of ECC RAM (I know having ECC is slower) but I was wondering what the actual benefits were of turning ECC on. For some reason I'm constantly having trouble with ECC RAM. It randomly reboots my computer when I play games... I've got it replaced twice already. After a little use, it just starts to malfunction or something. Anyway, I was wondering if I turned ECC on, would this fix the problem? I've turned it off since the RAM runs slower. Thanks.
