What's the average human response time?

My friend and I are having a discussion about how quickly someone can go from interpreting an event to, say, pushing a button in response to that event. So what I'm wondering is if anyone here can point me to some documentation on the matter that states has been able to prove what the average human response time is. Like 0.2 or 0.3 seconds, for example.

Thanks. :)

I would assume that this would be affected by enviroment. Reaction times in nuclear familes nad in city dwellers would probably be quicker than in only child familes and suburbanites to name a few varibles.

The ones that are really good at ddr recognize the steps that they are doing because they've played it so much. Doesn't have much to do w/ reaction time, its just being able to do a learned behavior more efficiently and being able to recognize patterns and processing them individually.

why don't you just drop a ruler and have the other guy grab it in midair. using simple physics, you can tell how long it took to fall the distance.

Last I heard, it was about 150ms, which seems to jive well with the other numbers here.

Wow, I'm horrible... 0.3 average on the washington.edu test and 0.2 average on the red dot test.
