I would pull him out of the private highschool and start him at a public highschool, might just be the change he needs. Have a whole new body of people to be around, that wouldn't know about what he has done in the past unless he tells them. He would also have a little more of the freedom he is trying to find, with a public school.
It will also save your family money, if he decides to not go to school, as you will not be paying a large sum of money for him to go, as you do for the private school. Public schools are also more likely to try and track him down if he decides to try skipping, as they get ranked by the number of students attending, to the number skipping classes, and on other points, which leads to the higher they are ranked, the more money they will get.

If I were your parents, I'd be pushing for professional counseling ASAP!

Meds? Oh HELL yeah! In fact, let's just pump him full of Ritalin and send him on his way. In fact, we could even bypass the digestive system and just inject the stuff...

In reality, he probably needs to be whacked upside the head with a 2x4 and be told that he's going to finish high school or else. Stupid kid doesn't want to eat? He will when he gets hungry enough...

Well, that's certainly a healthy attitude.

I didn't say just pump him full of meds and wth would Ritalin do? He'd be more of a candidate for something like Paxil or Effexor. It *does* work and some people can only lead a normal life, free of anxiety or fear by taking medication regularly. I know three people exactly like that although one is going to start counseling to try and work on getting himself off Paxil.

I find myself feeling you guys are coddling him. He needs his butt kicked into gear. First off he doesn't sound depressed, he sounds like he's taking advantage of your parents inablilty to parent. He's pitching fits and acting up like a 5 year, so you've got to start punishing him like a 5 year old. First thing take away his internet, and his anime porn or whatever he's watching. If home is more boring than school, he'll want to go back to school to get away. If he's actually got legitimate problems with kids picking on him, take him out of that stupid private school and send him to public school. Public schools teach you things you just can't learn in private schools, like how to be street smart and it makes you tougher too. Right now he's a spoiled little brat who needs some sense kicked into him. Tell your parents to stop babying him and to take a firm stance. If he wants to hunger strike, I say let him. He won't be able to keep that up. He'll probably be sneaking food on the side, making you think he's not eating. After a week or two of eating nothing but snack food, he'll be dying for some real stuff. Oh yeah, and ground his a$$ too!

Do these in the following steps -

1)Give us his AIM Handle

2)Make him goto school

3)If he doesnt goto school, take away the TV and the computer.

4)When I mean take away the TV/Computer I mean physically BREAK in front of him.

Did you say that the 16 was having temper tantrams? Make a video of him doing this and put it on Kazaa. That should get his ass in gear.

Glad someone is paying for him to attend private school. That is money well spent.

Put him in public school and take away his internet. He's turning into an anti-social geek.

I also recommend hard love. Take away his internet. Take away his TV. As soon as he says, "I'm 16!" slap him and tell him to start acting like it. Make him do chores around the house. Give him something other than the internet and video games to do. Get him interested in wood working or building RC planes. Get him interested in something other than a computer and AIM.

i would let him at least switch schools. i used to HATE going to school.. im not even sure what it was, i was just so depressed and school seemed to make it worse. so i begged my mom to let me switch to a charter school and its a lot better. i think it would be good for him because you still socialize some, but its a smaller school and to me just a cooler environment. maybe its just THAT school thats bothering him. maybe its the people there or.. something. just try switching schools.. not to an internet one though, thats just kinda dumb :-/ good luck.

It actually is a healthy attitude, if you stop and think about it. The kid need a freakin' clue, not Paxil.

solution: smack that boy in the face

I concur. Sounds like he needs a good @$$ beating. Or he needs military school.

Yup, he'll eat when he gets hungry.

He just needs a little tough love to get his act straight. The worse thing your parents could do is cater to his every whim

make hiim go out for a sport. I played a lot of sports in HS and there was always 1 or 2 kids a year who were really kinda anti-social who only joined the team because thier parents said they had to do some kind of extracirucular. in a team environment even if your not friendly you still get dragged into the team mentality and cheer for and get cheered by your teamates, it can really wake some kids up after a couple seasons. I saw one kid who was a total shut-in as a freshman, but the total corruption we gave him after a few road trips really made the kid come out of his shell by the time he was a junior.

sounds like you baby him too much, beat him in the face until he loves school and homework and stops crying like a bitch

1) take out of private school put in pub school
2) take away everything and i mean it all. TV, computer, Internet, radio....
3) force him to do his work. make him go to bed early ( take percausions to insure he doesent just sneak out)
4) get his arse up early make him clean before school
5) kick his ass
6) if all else fails he shoudl prpb see a doctor

update:

we've taken him out of private high school. I am waiting to hear from the enrollment counselor at the "internet high school". We have not seeked medical help yet; still pondering on that.

I agree, he needs a good a$$ kicking. He thinks he can get away with what he's doing
Military school would be a really good idea, I went and it did me wonders (and it wasen't bad either, liked it much better than any public school) then again it was about 20k a year. I can refer you to a nice military school if you'd like though.
pm me.

He's doomed...

But he sees his counselor and she says that he is depressed. Medical help is recommended.
Of course, GET HIM ON THE DRUGS!!!! It's always the answer.

For real, he better get some help, or he is going to end up a bigger loser than he already is.

Your brother is an annoying little pussy. I suggest 2 things: 1) Dump private school. 2) => Public school. 3) 2x4 when he bitches and whines about it. 4) Let him quit out of the public school system. 5) DO NOT allow the little prick any home-schooling. It's either all or nothing. Save your family's money.

It's his first real life decision! Does he want to amount to a burger flipper or somthing more worthwhile? It's all up to HIM.

I don't have friends. I don't like school. I used to get picked on (then I slammed some guy in the face - now they have the sense to do it only when I'm not around.) My girlfriend turned into a whore and dumped me. I spend all day on Anandtech. I am still a functional human being.

My little brother is the exact same way your brother is, perhaps a lot more violent, though. His day of reckoning is fast approaching. He's about to flunk out of the entire 9th grade, and he WILL NOT be attending summer school. He gets to repeat the grade.

How about finding out exactly whats wrong and whats causing it? If he won't tell you, then he's in no position to be demanding things. Once he does, everyone can make a much better judgement.

at 16 in ohio, you can legally drop out of school. i know a kid in my school who did it, but he came back the next year.

you cannot drop out until you are 16 though. parents still have to agree with it however.

MIKE

It's not medical help he needs.
IMO, it's not an internet school, either.

Try putting him into a decent public school, tell him about his chances of getting a job without finishing high school, show him that there are consequences in life. A psychologist is a waste of money in his case. If he really doesn't want to go to school, get him a job.
