What's some useful stuff to keep in the car?

My dad never leaves anything in the car, other than registration, tapes and CDs. Almost everyone I know has some basic things in the car, what are some of yours?

Some stuff I'm gonna put in the car are:
Umbrellas
Tools for changing spare tire (assuming you have the spare under the trunk covering)
Towels
Windex
Pen and paper
Disposable Camera
Flashlight + batteries
Fuses

This might be a lot of stuff, but it'll come in handy and the trunk has space dedicated for emergency items.

In my work truck we always have a snakebite kit (which I've almost had to use), a local Mapsco atlas, and a fire extinguisher.

My little Ranger has no room for storage since I put a sub behind my seat.

some stuff i got:
craftsman 73 piece tool set
air compressor
convict beater maglight
shop towels
quart of 5w30/pint of dot3 fluid/half gallon antifreeze/wiper fluid
armor-all/rainx wipes
fuses
maps
mace under the seat
ninja stars under the seat

Tire gauge, *good* jumper cables.

In the winter, extra windshied washer fluid (you never want to run of this), a broom (for fast snow removal), ice scraper, sawed-off snow shovel (for clearing my parking space, and "just in case").

In my trunk I have:

Cigarette lighter powered air compressor
Digital tire pressure gauge
Jumper cables
Can of Fix a flat
Snow brush
Windshield washer fluid
MFG included jack & tools

What I need to add are a roadside emergency kit, lighter/flares and some blankets.

Things that haven't been mentioned:

-First Aid Kit
-Blanket or one of those camping emergency blankets, if you live in a cold climate. If your car breaks down in the dead of winter in the middle of nowhere, you're going to freeze to death.

A package of baby wipes makes it easier to clean up any sticky fingers or messes you might make during a road trip. Bottle of water (unopened) and a couple granola bars or some other kind of snack in case you get stuck somewhere.

Oh, and I recommend carrying a small fire extinguisher. Mine actually got used once. I saw a couple pulled over with the hood up, flames coming out. The guy was so panicked that he was actually blowing on it. I ran over and tossed him the extinguisher, problem solved in 3 seconds or so.

In the Vandura, I keep: Fire extinguisher, condoms (My rear seat folds down into a bed!), disk image for carputer, 4x CDROM drive, 2 spare 300w inverters, 73piece toolkit, sheet, sheet of vinyl (Handy for virgins, won't ruin the apholstry), blankets, .45 under driver's seat, ammo in storage container under the back seat, spare fuses, replacement for what my psychic powers says is gonna break next, a spare pack of reverse threaded lugnuts, handheld CB radio (In case I can't get power to the built in one), military rations, road flares, repair manual, brillo pads, pocket knife, jumper cables, massive amounts of duct tape etc. etc. etc. etc.

In other words, it's the ultimate pimpmobile, and contains survival supplies for virtually any emergency, and repair supplies for virutally anything that can crop up on a trip.

I drive at least 25,000 miles per year for work and have used or needed all of the following at one point or another:

Basic tools like a hammer, adjustable wrench, couple of screwdrivers.
Duct tape.
Ice scraper and small foldable shovel.
GOOD jumper cables.
GOOD spare w/ jack
1 can of Fix-a-Flat
Blanket
GOOD flashlight
2 flares
A $10 roll of quarters and a $20 bill hidden somewhere.
Pen/magic marker/paper
Basic 1st Aid kit with bandaids, aspirin, etc.

The most critical are the duct tape, spare, Fix-a-Flat, jumper cables, the flashlight and the money. Seriously, if you forget all else, make sure you have some cash hidden in the car, enough to buy a meal and a LOT of phone calls if you get stranded somewhere that doesn't take credit cards and doesn't have an ATM machine.
