What's so great about the Mars Volta?

I don't get it... just sounds like a disorganized mess to me. I have their "De-Loused in the Comatorium" album, and "Eriatarka" is really the only song I like (and it really is great). Rest of them, from a brief glance, make no sense as music.

Couple good songs, but really it's like they smashed a bunch of hipster-musicians together in the hadron collider.

They fucking rock. De-loused is one of the greatest albums ever made.

Some of their songs are great.

I believe de-loused is my favorite of their albums.

Same. I can listen to De-loused straight through with no issue. None of their other albums can I say the same, and would generally agree with those albums the songs just feel like a mess of instruments making noises. The Widow is also a damn good song on Frances the Mute, and I can listen to some of the longer songs on that album if I'm in the right mood.

You're right. Go back to listening to Good Charlotte.

They're better than the crap on the radio. I could record myself in the john on taco night and sound better than linkin park though, so that's not saying much. I can't really get into them, I think they have some really inspired moments, but these seem spread out randomly among copious quantities of cacaphonous chaos (/cackle). They do concept albums, except for Amputecture, according to their wiki. I honely can't make out a word the guy's saying, maybe I should listen to them while reading lyrics on a website. But that feels so corny... I dunno, maybe I'm just getting old.

Since when is Linkin Park on the radio?

Beats me. I haven't listened to radio in ~5 years. People always talk about them though, so I assumed they were. They're certainly bad enough to be standard FM fare.

To me I think they embody the next logical leap in progressive music. The genre's limits have been pushed over the years and I feel like that is where TMV are at right now. Their music is really challenging to listen to and at first dose sometimes seems too chaotic and overbearing.. but a lot of progressive music does this. I really need time to fully understand what's going on. Some of their transitions do get quite long in the tooth but for the most part the bulk of the content is outstanding in my opinion. Omar has such an insane amount of really interesting and different riffs floating around in his head that it's unreal. He has like 5 solo discs just full of shit.

Obviously it's not for everybody, that's my take on it.

Ehh any rock played on the radio today sounds pretty much the same to me. It's all about getting mad at mommy and daddy because they got you the wrong color iPod and slitting your wrists over it.

I thought they were pure crap when I saw them in concert ~4 years ago. They opened for Queens of the Stone Age and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. No one in the audience was into them. The guitars had too much feedback and the singer was dancing around like an idiot.

Stupid hipsters.

Although I enjoy the Mars Volta, I'd love to see At the Drive In get back together, too.

MV is definitely an acquired taste...they do kick ass live, though.

ATDI was amazing, don't get me wrong, but TMV was the natural progression musically into something more innovative. ATDI broke down a lot of walls in the post-hardcore scene but the format was limiting for the talent Omar/Cedric have.

Exactly what I came in here to say, though probably not quite so eloquently. :D

I like some of their stuff though when I went to see them live their sound was so terrible and it was turned up so loud I thought my brain was going to jump out of my skull and run for the exit.

I have their album that has The Widow on it. Great song. I kind of understand where they are going with the album, but I find it a little too metal mashy and lacking in harmony. I prefer Tool for the "you have to listen to the whole album" prog metal.

Truth.

I feel bad for people who hear TMV for the first time live because I've seen them 3 times and only one time of the three sounded remotely good. They need to fire their FOH guy so fucking bad it's not even funny.

K1052 and I left early from their last show because I felt like my head was going to fucking explode with all the cymbals/guitar and complete lack of vocals and bass :(
