What's so great about lite-on burners?

I keep on seeing in the hot deals forum some great prices for CDR-R/W burners, but at least one person asks if the burners in question are lite-on. Is lite-on a good or a bad thing? What's the difference?

I personally don't like them, nosiey, cd's come out piping hot and underrun errors. The main reason they are so popular is because they are dirt cheap.

They are popular because they are cheap and perform as well or better than higher priced brands.

The previous poster must have had a bad one because I've purchased a number of them - no problems at all, no 'hot' discs, no underruns, etc.

Same as above, i have the 48x12x48 CDRW drive. They are excellent.
Why pay extra for a drive from a big name brand, when you could buy a Lite-On and get a drive thats equal to, or maybe better than the big name branded one. Plus the Money youve saved can go towards a pack of blank CDs.

Maybe because they are largest Manufacture of CDR/RW, plus price/performance is good, and it's a good thing inless you use Yamaha and/or Plextor IMO

Cheap, fast, good performance. Almost the standard and chances are you may already have a LiteOn drive that's just been remarked as another brand. If you want the best go Plextor, otherwise go LiteOn.:)

As with everyone else, Cheap and good. I'm on my third one and none of them have any problems. All still working fine.

Ditto what everyone else is saying... I have both a Lite-on DVD and CDRW in my system as we speak, and have had no problems with either.

I own a Plextor and I love it. If I had to buy a new burner today, Lite-on would be on the top of my list.

In addition to cheap prices, I think one of the most attractive features of Lite-On's is the ability to overclock. i.e., 24x becomes 40x with a bios update. 48x becomes 52x, 16xrw becomes 24xrw.

Lite-On forced the other drive makers to lower their prices by producing excellent drives at a fraction of the price. I still prefer them b/c of their price/performance and what they've done in making CD burning such a mainstream platform.

LiteOns are the best...I've only had one died on me but I think that's mainly because of my motherboard because it kept killing my other components, glad I have a new one now! :) Anyways, I have the 48/12/48 right now, GREAT SPEED AND VALUE... $60-70 for the 48/12/48, that's one HELL of a deal!

Shoud try to visit the Hot Deals forum here at Anandtech. You could've gotten three of those at that price.

Go to www.cdfreaks.com, go to the forums, they have loads of information about this...

I had a 32x12x40, they had a BIOS update and made it a 40x12x40, no problem.

Bought a new Lite-On, 48x24x48, did a BIOS update and made it a 52x24x48, no problem (only been running it for a week, so not much history on this drive - yet).

Lite-On's are fast, very low price, and upgradeable. What else do you need?

I would love to try and flash my LiteOn's to make them even faster but what are the downsides of it? Lower lifespan or more buffer underrun, etc, etc ???

I love my LiteOn 48x24x48. And it is very quiet.

Now my LiteOn dvd drive on the other hand, I feel like tossing it some days. It is incredibly loud... I look out my window sometimes thinking an airplane has just gone overhead.

right. period.

i got my 24x writer, no problems at all, well... a little bit noisy but still acceptable.

I read an article comparing LiteOn and Plextor, it said that after 40+ continuous writings LiteOn failed 8 times and Plextor failed 4 times... not a big deal since I never burn anything simultaneously above 10 times :p

anyone ever notice these are made in china? not japan or taiwan. this is why they can sell to you at a much cheaper price and even cheaper with rebate almost cost the same as CDROM. so no reason why anyone can't afford one. with cdrom, you are limited to read only and it is of little use today.

good info. I have a 24x that I got a while back, worked great out of the box and still burning strong. I have used just about every brand and Lite-on is right up there at the top, IMHO.

yeah, like everyone said, they're fast and super cheap
but I agree with tabb: very noisy (except almost all drives that fast are about as noisy) and they generate a lot heat.
