Whats "Rebate"?

Hi.
Whenever i see people talking here about the price of something from a US store, they allways mention things like "...after rebate it was about $800..."
So what exactely is rebate? Its not a term that i hear used at all here in the UK.

You pay full price for the item up front, then send in a form with the receipt and UPC code, and they send you a check for the rebate amount. So the item's final cost is the upfront price minus the rebate.

Yes, Amazon just rejected my $50 t610 phone rebate. I got the rebate form through mail from Amazon customer support.

After calling them and emailing them over and over again

Well yeah...
I wasn't offering any editorial comments, just providing a definition...

Think of rebates as money that is supposed to be returned to you a month or so ago if you jump through some hoops. You jump through the hoops and come back at the promised time and your money is not there. They want pictures of you jumping through the hoops. After you send them pictures then you might get it a month or two later ... that is after another follow up call.

That still aint explaining what rebate is though.

I get the impression/s that rebate is like a "money back" option.
Like for example, buy this TFT for £600, and if you buy it before the 30th Dec, we`ll give you £40 back....
Is it sorta like that?

They promise to give it back to you in a month or 2 if you provide the manufacturer copies of the upc code and the receipt

Yes a rebate is a deal that you eventually get your money back.

For example a typical rebate deal is "Free computer modem after rebate". You go to the store that carries the modem and has the rebate. You buy the modem, lets say for $20. You then fill out the rebate form with your name and address, and mail that form in with the receipt and proof of purchase (so the company knows you actually bought and used the item). Then ~8 weeks later you get a $20 check in the mail. Theoretically that modem was free. Of course it cost money for the stamp to mail in the form, you usually have to pay tax (not covered by rebates), and often companies convienently "forget" to mail you the rebate.

A marketing tool the manf. use to jack up sale (or enter a tough market, or move inventory). Create an image that price is lower. Store do not need to actually lower the price up front (look good on book).
chances are not many(only 30% do?) ppl follow the instruction and rules and get their money back in 3-5 months.

It's a way for a company to get full price up front, with a promise to send you some back, if you send in a form. Some people are screaming scam, because some companies don't honor the offer, or take forever to mail you the refund. I think they do it because many people (like myself) don't get around to mailing in the rebate until it's too late (there's usually a deadline). That way, they benefit from the increased sales of the promotion, but don't have to pay 100% of it. With an instant sale, the company is guaranteed to lose 100% of the discount. At least with a rebate, there's a chance someone won't claim it.

I hate rebates, and won't buy something based on a rebate deal. If I'm buying something anyway, and there's a rebate, I'll do it. But I don't get excited for these "$20 after rebate!" deals. Black Friday meant nothing to me, because everything was "after rebate" (AR). You still pay full amount up front, and probably won't see the money till next Spring. I want instant savings. Deferred discounts are a way for companies to screw the customer. They get to keep your money a little longer. </rant>

and when they keep your money a little longer, they make a killing off all that interest. thieves is what they are. they'll run off with your money, & only give it back if you catch them quick enough & give them a couple shots in the ribs with a tire iron.

You people who say that rebates are a scam are such noobs!! 🙂

I just got back 7 rebate checks in the mail today totaling $250. I have about another $700 or so dollars in outstanding rebates that are due back within the next 2 months or so. From the time I mailed the rebates in to the time I received them (for the above 7) was less than a month and a half.

I in general don't have many problems with my rebates. I have the occasional glitch with Parago, but a 1 minute long chat with a CSR on the phone normally fixes that rather quickly. They're pushovers when it comes to rebates.

The only other company that I've had issue with is RebateStatus.com. They've screwed up a couple of my Buy.com rebates in the past 2 months. A quick email to Buy.com solved those issues too as well within a couple of days and the rebates were processed quickly and efficiently after the fact.

Funny enough, the rebate house that people complain the most about, TCA, is the company that I've had the LEAST amount of problems with...well, them and Microsoft.

Bottom line, if you don't have the patience or the common sense to keep copies of everything, or don't have the "time" to make a phone call every once in a while, YOU HAVE NO BUSINESS EVEN DEALING WITH REBATES!!

What? Me? "noob"?

I just know the old addage: time is money. It's often not worth the hassle, especially on the el-cheapo stuff.

i've gotten all my rebates.. exept one.. i think i mixed up the UPC's... but i'll never know because i can't find my copies. i pdf EVERYTHING pretty much, but for some reason, this one thing i could not find. it was only $10 luckily. anything over $50 gets certified return receipt for me.

1 minute or 2 mins max on the phone is not gonna kill you. Buy.com/RebateStatus.com screwed up a $60 Fuji rebate of mine. I emailed Buy.com and had it corrected within 2 days.

Not much of a hassle IMHO.
