what's next for DVD-RW?

Speeds have already maxed out for +/-R. Are we going to see faster RW speeds soon or faster +R9 speeds? Are we going to see -R DL at all?

IMO, I think -R is going to lose the battle and fade away leaving +R as the standard. It used to be -R was a lot cheaper, now it's the other way around. Newegg has a 100 pack of Ridata 8X +R's for $27 after a $10 rebate...under $30 for 100 8X?!?!

The same 100 pack of -R is $45.

Nah. There are many helpful people around here, regardless of post count.

🙂

Besides, if you saw my last few thousand posts, you probably wouldn't be impressed anymore... 😱

😉

-R will never lose the battle! always remember that +R will come before -R does not mean -R is inferior.
It's just marketing gimmicks. Is RW useless? Seems like another inferior format just to milk the industry.

8x DVD+RW is already supported by a some drives. There are rumors about even faster speeds in development (like 12x DVD+RW some time next year).
6x DVD-RW is supported by the LG GSA-4163B and most coming drives.

8x DVD+R DL should show up in late Q1 next year.
4x DVD-R DL should also show up in Q1 next year.

LOL!

Where's RossMAN or NSF4 when you need them?

Not sure which standard, if any will win. Seems DL is only +R so that might be the key. As long as most burners and players support both, doesn't matter at this point.

Blue laser DVD's will be released (maybe 2005?) with much higher capacities for HDTV, etc. The ballgame changes then anyway.

I can't even afford to buy the 2.4x DL yet and they're already planning 8X !!
So far Only Verbatim carry DL media and just Saw Ritek started to carry DL media.

Anybody else is planning on making DL disc ? I would say almost 100% of the drives that
were manufactured in the past year were DL ready but the media still cost $9.00 per disc.

Ricoh DL media is available in some parts of the world now (Asia and Europe). The same goes for Philips DL media (developed by Philips, manufactured by CMC) and Prodisc. Infomedia is also working on DL media.
