What's New in Backup Utilities?

Running XP SP3. Just did a format and new install. Now I need to have an easy to use and reliable backup system in place. I have Acronis True Image Home but I don't like it. Freezes up at the 93% completed level every time I try and run a backup. All I want to do is back up my files and folders, and Outlook Express. Open to suggestions. Thank you.

I have a linux backup server, maps the c$ and d$ and does full disk rsync backups to removable disks on the server. Runs overnight. Depending which drive I put in the server, various jobs run. (there are "pointers" on the drives themselves that tell which job to run). Just requires a bit of bash scripting and free standard linux utilities.

MMM well Ok technically it isn't a file synch app, but I think because of it's scheduling capabilities, this will suffice for my needs.

This is my take on Cobian.

Pros:
- The backups are just zip files. So, you will not need any special proprietary software to access your old backups.
- It's free.

Cons:
- It uses the Archive file attribute to establish if a file has been changed or not. That is how it manages incremental and differential backups.
This is why you cannot set up both incremental and differential backups for the same set of source files.
- It does not have an automated restore utility. So, you will have to manually restore all your incremental backups one after another.

After having EVERY Acronis True Image go corrupt due to bad RAM, I went with WHS as well, and absolutely love it. I had to do my first restore last week, and it was absolutely amazing.

While I haven't had the need to do a restore job, I love WHS in general. =) Got my WHS Box online and setup a Photo Gallery website for family and friends. No longer have to worry about a hosting site or space limits
