Earlier tonight, while speaking with my grandfather, he hit me with a somewhat out-of-the-blue question.

"Jr., how would I go about writing something that would automate program installations, and move certain files from one folder to another?"

As I haven't taken a programming class in years, "I have no idea grandpa" was the only answer I could come up with. Normally he only bugs me about simple issues, like webcams not working or spyware infections. I can't handle not being the go to grandson for his tech questions so I'm willing to do a little learning on the side to help him out.

So AT forum friends, what language should I be looking to learn to help an old man out?
 
Which details should I ask him for? What OS he's installing this stuff on? Which programs he's trying to automate the installation of?
 
When's he auto-installing? You can look at slipstreaming if he wants to automate program installs along with the OS. What does he want to move? Why does he need it automated?
 
I spoke to him again after work today, and it looks like what he wants can be accomplished by n/vLite and Window Post-Install. Apparently a bunch of relatives are coming into town, and he'll be fixing their laptops / desktops so they can all start chatting with one another via the computer instead of the telephone. He just wanted to reformat their drives and have a scipt to automatically install Windows and various other programs while he's at work.

At any rate, it looks like there was a much simpler solution to his problem than I had originally thought. 🙂

 
He's going to do a fresh install of Windows on a bunch of relatives' PCs? That has horrible idea written all over it.
 
Haha, I don't question his ideas anymore. I just provide possible solutions to his problems and then sit back and wait for hilarity to ensue.

Where are all of my pictures? Why doesn't my bank account automatically log me in? :laugh:
 
I cleared autocomplete on my uncle's IE once (because I'm just a neat person) and that was a mistake. He apparently had a client's email address stored there and nowhere else.
