The Bond Beetle? It may have been hard to believe only a few months ago, but the next James Bond film may just feature the famed British spy in a new Volkswagon Beetle instead of the usual BMW or Aston Martin.

Universal Studios, the owners of the Bond license, recently announced a deal with the German automaker to feature the Volkswagon brand in the next 3 Bond films. Cheryl Keating, a spokesperson for Volkswagon, commented that the company would like to see Bond promote the more unique and market friendly cars in the VW line. "We've noticed that the same demographic that buys the new Beetle are also the same consumers who used to watch Bond in the '60s and '70s. We hope to capitalize on that product knowledge with the visibility of the James Bond franchise."

Producers of the next Bond film are apparently already at work designing modifications to the now famous Beetle to make it more like a car 007 would drive. "Apart from the remote driving we plan to bring back to this film, we have a scene where a carjacking henchman is in the passenger's seat. The effects guys suggested that the daisy in the dashboard could squirt acid when (Bond) touches a hidden trigger. Its things like that we plan to use to make the Beetle more intimidating."

The next Bond movie is due out November 2002.

Funny, but you're not fooling anyone when you misspell "Volkswagen". ;)

Almost. I've read in several places that the car was to be an Astin Martin. I had to do a double take when I read your little piece. :)
Oh, by the way, you should have used "OP" instead of "UP" for your newswire. OP -- Optimus Prime. :p

/me cracks myself up silly.

Not that far-fetched . . . VW is launching some high-end autos . . . nothing like Ford (I mean Aston Martin).

ain't it sweet :) I'm so glad they are putting him back in an Aston, I mean C'mon he's British, he's not gonna ride around in some German car.

The aston is soo much better a car for a spy, look at the 0-100-0mph of the Martin... Killer for having to stop to miss a incoming rocket then shooting outta the hole again.

I don't know, but Pierce Brosnan as James Bond is not the same James Bond I love to watch. Actually, after Sean Connery, it hasn't been the same. The latest flicks were nothing more special than any other action movies I've seen. Anyway, BMW is just too mainstream for a super spy. How many Aston Martin do you see each day? I've seen so many BMW, from the 7 series to the 3 series everyday, and I live in Boise, not the richest city in America.

That Aston Martin is sweeet! Does anyone else think the $228,000 price tag is a bit on the high side though? :)
