What's it there to do in NYC?

I'm in Boston so I've been to NYC quite many times. I made a similar thread last year doing the touristy things for the first time (always went just for night life during college).

Well, I'm going with GF again because we love the Korean food there, and we wanna check out Guggenhaim (sp) which we missed last time. And uh... that's all we have.

We're staying 1 night. So what else is it there to do that we haven't done:

Top of the Rock
Central Park
Moma
The Met
Chinatown

There has to be far more....

And OH! Can you also recommend must-eat STREET/FEEL-GOOD food? I've had my share to super fancy dining like Nobu and etc, but I know NYC is also good for cheap amazing specialty food.. like the ones you'd see on Man vs Food.

What slice of pizza is a must try? What else for simple food?

Top of the Rock is pretty cool. Lot less crowded than Empire State and you get a nice view of it as well as Manhattan. We went at night and it was great taking photos, except it was pretty damned cold (went early March).

Just walk the city. You're bound to find something.

NY Botanical Garden - purty flowers :) plus, perfect time to go
Museum of Natural History (my favorite museum)

For cheap food, hit any of the papaya places. Gray's, Papaya Dog, etc. There's a billion fancier places in NYC, but for damn cheap food, they're not too bad.

69 Bayard in Chinatown (used to wallpapered with dollar bills, they remodeled and started over) you have to walk down into it I think.

Best food ever, fast, cheap and always the little man sitting at the back table rolling wontons or place settings :)

Must eat food places: Junior's Cheesecake, Beard Papa Cream puffs, and stop at Rocco's bakery for some AWESOME cannoli's and coffee (or any other dessert type stuff. the cannoli's are just awesome.) You could also stop at the carnegie deli for a killer pastrami sandwich. As far as pizza... I'd recommend Lombardi's.

This. Be adventurous, just go wherever your feet will take you. Just walking around the city is fun, plus you might discover some good restaurants that we don't know about. That's half the fun of being in NYC: just exploring to see what's good.

All the well known "good" places are bound to have the tourist-type, anyway. Which isn't bad, but you gotta venture off the beaten path if you're going to frequent NYC.

I'm glad you asked this question. Due to its relatively small size in comparison to many other cities in the east coast, many people are hesitant to visit New York in fear they will fine little to do. They, however, are wrong. Plenty can be found to do in New York City, if one knows where to look, even for the most sophisticated of Urbanites. From its rolling hills to its scenic lakes and rivers, New York City is a bastion of outdoor activities. One can take up boating, rafting, hiking, snowmobiling, and skiing all in the same day. Activities for the avid hunter are also available in a substantial portion of the city. For those less inclined to take up outdoor leisure activities, many of its fine establishments may provide you with a fun-filled day that you will be sure to cherish forever. There are at least five bowling alleys located in the greater city limits, a basketball court, an arcade, and even a batting cage across from one of the local drinking holes. Then there are also the fine dining establishments to consider. You are encouraged to try some of the ethnic foods served within the city at its two Chinese buffets or its delicious Tex-Mex restaurant.

With all this information to consider and plan for, you can see that New York City is no longer the city to avoid when traveling along the majestic east coast of America. It is a destination that all individuals of all walks of life can enjoy. I encourage you to visit and try out everything that New York City has to offer. And don't forget your fishing pole!

Good Street Food? hmmm... the first one that comes to mind would be that famous Halal Cart on 53rd and 6th after 7pm. You'll know exactly where it is by the huge line. Also, good burgers include the Park Meridian Burger Joint and Shake Shack. Pizza you want to go to Lombardi's, Patsy's for the nicer restaurant style and to Joe's Pizza or Bleecker Street Pizza, both in the west village for good street style. For ramen, you can go to Ippudo, which has amazing broth. Daisy Mae, Rack and Soul, Rub, and Hill Country for barbeque. The rest I can name are all fancy, so will hold back on that unless asked =P

Stuff to do? hmm... the possibilities are endless unless you narrow it down a bit. As for free stuff, definitely check out Grand Central Station, ride the Staten Island Ferry for a free look at the Statue, the NYPL on 5th Avenue, the Library of Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, Ground Zero, Time Square, etc...

Off the beaten path, you can go check out the Mac World Store, Nintendo World, and the Disney Store (all clustered around Radio City), as well as Carnegie Hall.

Yeah, I'm still in the process of putting together a NYC ATOT Meet.

Yup, we did just that last year. I walked until I couldn't feel my feet and couldn't sleep at night because they were so sore. We found this one gem of a restaurant couple blocks east of The Met. It was a Mediterranean place that had amazing hummus, yogurt sauce meat and amazing chewy bread. And it was so god damn cheap for such fancy place!!! ($6-9 per dish).

I'll probably visit that tomorrow. The location around 8th gives much less of a discount for a dozen.

I think the Macy's 'flower show' is still going on if you're around 34th/broadway.

Take the ACE to 23rd st./8th ave and walk to Magnolia Bakery in the West Village. On our way, get dinner, skip dessert. At Magnolia order a cupcake and a banana pudding. Eat them at the park outside then walk it off while walking in an entirely different direction than whence you came.
