What's it like coming home?

Homebase is the US for me (I know we have some ATers around the world even if most of the forum is in US/Canada). I've been living and working overseas for the last 4 months. Honestly, it's felt both a lot shorter and longer than that. But I've gotten used to living here to a certain extent, and have some routines built up. I am flying back home this weekend, and I'm quite nervous about re-integrating. Will all my hobbies and friends still be around in the same way? Will I be able to pick up where I left off? What will work be like? Not only did my US office just go through a fairly big management shakeup, but working overseas changed my perspective a lot on what work should look like. Suffice to say, my overseas counterparts have an infinitely more relaxed work environment than I do in the US, and I plan on bringing at least some of that back with me.

Just wondering what others have experienced with this sort of thing. Did things change a lot for you? Did you eventually settle back in? How long did it take?

I've been gone since the end of October, will be back in 17 days so i'll let you know, but from my previous trips abroad for a long time it takes a couple of weeks to get settled back in, every time i do come back i hate work more and more

Part of me wants to sell everything and then buy one of those fixer-upper houses in italy where they pay you to move there and just live a super simple life. mo money, mo problems.

dude, I left Taiwan when I was 13 for Argentina, then moved to Canada when I was 20. 4 month absence is a FWP.
moving permanently is not the same thing as what the op asked...or are you moving back to Taiwan anytime soon?

I have a pretty established career and life when i moved overseas and lived for 2 years. probably the greatest 2 years of my life. I came back to a totally different life situation so it was definitely not the same as it was. even though i came back to the same neighborhood, house and wife. we had our first kids immediately after coming home. adjusting was pretty damn difficult and i'm still adjusting.
