wtf

straight shaves are common here but not cheap. One of the best barber shops here charge $30 for that. $50 for a full treatment.

interesting you didn't say what you hoped to get a happy ending from.. i would definitely make that clear before agreeing on a price

a straight shave can be anything from a few buck to over $50 around here. Depends on where you go.

Just call a few barbershops from the yellow pages.

LOL at the Facial - Someone else's happy ending. If you're paying 50 bucks for a shave... than yea, someone is definitely going to get a happy ending.

True, Plus you probably want to charge a decent amount to a void the "for 5 bucks i'll try it out" or whatever. It is a luxury now...

I go down to old Merv's, he was a lifelong barber and is 72 now, still has an old shop in his house and is open only Saturdays. A lot of barbers aren't taught now because of concerns about blood. :disgust:

It's not the closest shave I can get, but it is close, and he rarely cuts me. I think he misses the hairs he can't see because I am so blonde. The trick is the hot towels and the hot lather, that is harder to do at home. It is an experience, his shop looks straight out of the 70s. He charges 3 bucks and I never pay less than 5. When done, he asks, "you want a mild lotion, or the oh Jesus?" I of course chose the latter, a menthol aftershave that he puts extra menthol crystals in, and yeah I feel like a Newport and can't see for about 10 minutes.

I bought a nice Fromm razor, a strop, and a whetstone and couldn't do it myself. The idea of not giving Gilette another penny appealed to me but that kit cost me like 60 bucks.

You really can't do it yourself, there is a reason barbers used to do it. Unless you just wanna keep the top layer off and look all patchy. Only option is to teach your wife.

i was looking at straight razors a while back when some shaving threads were popping up. a straight razor is a good knife, and good knifes can get expensive. *shrug* dunno about that particular one, though.

ive switched to a DE razor and really like it, kit cost me a bit to get started (start kit, handle, blade assortment) but im glad i did it.

In Chicago (and LasVegas, and in England, their home) Truefitt & Hill will do a full straight-razor shave for $50.00 (tips extra).

It's the full treatment: steam towels, oil, lather+towels, lather, shave, alum, balm / aftershave. It takes about an hour or so, depending on the barber.

T&H are barbers to the royal house for the last one hundred and fifty years or so. They have shops around the world (and websites! - http://www.truefittandhill.com/landing.php). I think they also have shops in NYC, maybe Boston too ... wherever overpaid lawyers congregate ...

To get info on doing it yourself, and straight razors in general (including lists of where to get a straigh-razor shave):

http://straightrazorplace.com/index.php
and
http://badgerandblade.com/

There are some U-Tube videos on shaving with straight razors too.

Have fun, but remember, the other name for a straight razor is "CutThroat razor" ... and there's a good reason for it.

I have four straights myself, and use 'em when I have time. If time is short, I use a double-edge; it's like.30 a blade versus over a dollar for the 3,4,5 bladed commercial razor blades.

Then you get into the soaps, balms, aftershaves, brushes, (don't forget the styptic & alum)

Good Luck

It's not hard at all to use a straight razor. I've been doing it for 20 years now. You can also get some nice equipment cheap if you keep your eyes open at antique shops. Just make sure the blade isn't worn out, and stay away from fancy handles. They boost the price significantly without adding performance.
