when you do discovery on your own records?

(discovery is a legal term for formal requests of the other party's records for building a case)

but what's it called if you do research your own records prior to a trial?

investigative auditing? investigative accounting?

If you are talking about accounting records, you could call it a forensic audit.

If its court records, its called PITA. I had a BS case against me and wanted copies of the police report, etc. It was going to take ~6 weeks and something like $75. I just gave up and plead guilty.
