If it's gonna take you 3 years to upgrade again, then forget about a "futureproof" motherboard. Just get a new CPU and motherboard combo in 3 years.

Has AMD stated an EOL for socket 754? Until you can purchase socket 939 CPU and motherboard combos from Fry's for $69, socket 754 is not dead yet. 😛

I doubt they have an EOL for 754 seeing as how the Turion sits on it.

BTW...You can get 754 combos at Fry's on the cheap?

Maybe so... but you could still put a Duron 600Mhz on an nForce 2 Ultra motherboard. You COULD just upgrade the motherboard. Now you need to make both upgrades.

True, but I never consider backwards compatiblity of a motherboard to be a strength. If I'm buying a new MB, I'm also buying a new CPU, so why would I care if obselete junk can still work in that MB?
The fowards compatibility of sktA was not continous or unbroken, it was 4 seperate 'sockets' during it's span.

so if i plan on buying 3700+ san diego 939 retail, which mobo is good?

i dont plan on OC and SLI. I will use x800 pci-e and 2x512 DDR400 kingston value ram and 2 regular UATA hdds.

is ASUS A8N-E good?

Yes. About $70-80 will get you a socket 754 Sempron 2600+ or 2800+ an an ECS 755-A2 motherboard.

Speaking of Epox, Newegg had a deal for $126 for a retail box A64 2800+ and an Epox 8KDAI Nforce3 board tossed in for free. That's the same combo I have in the system I'm typing this on that will POST at 2.7GHz and is stable at 2.5GHz easy.

Sempron 3400+ FTW! Check out my rig - still in the process of benching it, but it seems to be ~ >= A64 3800+ S939!
