$45k just in case of divorce? Jeebus someone doesn't trust their wife... future divorce waiting to happen more like it.

Most I have to put in a Safety Deposit if I were to get one:
Car Titles
Birth Certificates
House Deed
Social Security Card

I mean really, 4 slips of paper - is it really worth it? How much is a safety deposit box these days?

Cheap. I have an account to where I can get one for $7.50/yr.

how the fuck did you get $45k in cash?

I hope you pulled it out in small increments over a long period of time. Else that shit WILL be found by a lawyer come divorce time.

I think this thread answers your question (post 68)
Few years ago I let someone borrow money to buy a house.(my name was on the deed).
When he pay me back, I thought he would just give a cashier check or something.
NO, he gave me a bag of $90k and I counted it in the car before signing the title to him.
I was nervous as shit counting all the money.
I think he had all the cash because he was going through a divorce and was hiding money.
I put $50K in the safety deposit box and had a hell of a time depositing the rest into the banks.
I even took a pic but have no idea if I still have it.

The usual... money of various currencies, fake passports, a gun.

Edit-Lest anyone think I'm serious, I don't even have a safe deposit box.

LOL. Family court judge is not going to look kindly on trying to hide cash in a safe deposit box. And yes, your ex's lawyer will find it; you're not the only one who's ever tried that.

Anyway: mine has birth certificates, deeds, copies of insurance documents, etc etc. Nothing exciting, mainly "it'd be nice to have these after my house burns down".

Last I checked about $50/year. I'm seriously considering it, though. More for a place to put a hard drive than the other stuff. I figure it would be pretty safe in a SDB. I'd be pretty depressed about losing all my data, a real possibility if I don't have off-site backup that's reliable.

This is not true unless the pre-nup was not legal to begin with. A good pre-nup is pretty ironclad.
I've never been married, but if I contemplate it a pre-nup is likely in the cards, I figure. It would make me feel way more secure than otherwise. I haven't seen it but very convincing is what this should be: Divorce Corp

don't have one, but going to get one as soon as I have a free weekend day to go to the bank...

I'd put my birth certificate, passport, social security card, a small hard drive with super important/irreplaceable documents (probably buy 2 and swap them out every other month to keep it synced up), and any valuable jewelry or family heirlooms (all I can really think of is my dad's high school ring and my own. also assuming/hoping that my grandfather's wedding band would get passed down to me after he dies, none of which are terribly valuable but they have a lot of meaning)

My data changes so much I can't afford to put a physical drive in the Safety deposit box though is my problem :\

What data are you guys talking about when you say put a hard drive in your safety deposit box? Because for me it would be all my scanned financial documents (Monthly bills, paycheck copies, credit card statements, legal statements, insurance statements, etc.. etc...)

Inb4 porn related joke.

I don't really see a point in keeping the bolded. certainly, if your house burned down and you didn't have a copy of your paycheck from April of 2009, it's probably not going to affect you any.

my most irreplaceable digital items would likely be all my papers/essays from school, creative writings, and picture library (all of which is backed up to a cloud service, but I still sleep better maintaining my own backups as well).

and then there's stuff that I *could* replace, but it'd be a hassle (like my MP3 collection). and then porn. 😛

I never had one until 3 yrs ago.
Got married and decided to have emergency funds just in case.
A couple of 24k bullions and $45K.
I know its a waste but I know I won't be poor if I ever get a divorce.

Divorce Lawyer would hire a PI to discover everything you pay for, and they'll find the safety deposit box.

Move that to a private safety deposit box company. They do get robbed from time to time and are not insured, but neither is your vault box.

Anyway, if you're trying to hide money and don't get bitcoin, just get a private deposit box and pay for it with money orders.
