What do you guys actually keep in your car in case of emergency? I have neglected to pack anything other than a flashlight, small air compressor, and a window break tool. I guess having roadside assistance and only driving locally has made me complacent but taking a trip and they may not have service so I just got curious what you people keep at a minimum.

ie.
Jumper cables
Fix-a-flat
Air compressor
Mylar blanket

MR2, tiny tool kit (pretty much for intercooler hose clamps).

LX450, boxed Craftsman tool kit, 54mm axle nut socket, 4-way, hi-lift, two spare tires, flares, compressor, fire starting stuff, fixed blade knife, paper towels, emergency blanket, two Fenix flashlights and ~10 spare CR123A's and ~4 gallons of water. I don't remember what else.

Socket kit
Air compressor
Two screwdrivers
Spare tire + Jack
Jumper cables
Extra bulbs
Knife
Umbrella
Flashlight

Car as proven to use no oil and coolant levels haven't changed since I bought it, so I'm not in the habit of carrying extra.

If I lived further north there would be a blanket.

does all this contribute to less mpg due to weight or is it negligible? I assume you drive it around every day and not just for trips.

I'll take pics. Its just basic car stuff in a tool bag, and basic survival gear in a small backpack (in case I have to leave the vehicle).

2014 Fusion, New England, with two small children and a 10 year old:

2 flashlights (one large 4D Maglite, one small 2AA Fenix or similar light)
A few glow sticks (to illuminate the vehicle or occupants if stranded on the side of the road)
2-3 12oz water bottles
5'x8' tarp
Duct tape
Nylon rope
Zip ties
2x Mylar blankets
2x Cheap emergency ponchos
2x Lighters
Basic first aid kit
Small container of Advil and Tylenol
Hand sanitizer
Fleece blanket
Spare jacket
2x pairs of gloves
Spare small diaper bag with the basics
55pc 3/8" socket set
OEM jack & handle
OEM spare tire
Jumper cables
1 large phillips and 1 large flathead screw driver
Pliers
Vice grips

I'm planning to add a full change of clothes (that either my wife or I could wear, maybe the 10 year old in a pinch) and maybe a small tow strap. Winter is the biggest issue around here, so having a way to stay warm and having clothes that you can change into after getting soaked trying to get the car out of a snow bank can literally be a life saver. Chances are, help is only a cell phone call away, but you never know.

All of this stuff fits into the center console and a small plastic crate in my trunk. It's just a little bit of space and weight in order to know I have what I need to get out of a jam.

a window break tool

I also keep a razor sharp knife within reach to cut myself out of my seat belt harness should I find myself upside down and hanging. I really hate when that happens.

Oh yeah, and a jaws-of-life, which operates off the emergency air compressor. You just never know when you'll have to chop out the a-pillars to extract yourself from a bad accident. But it pays to be prepared.

A lot of the equipment I carry is to assist others, not myself.

Last time I found myself hanging upside down, the button worked just fine. (Toyota Sequoia)

I need to get around to figuring out what I want to carry in the vette in regards to an emergency kit. In the evo I have the following:

- A few bottles of water
- Lifestraw
- A few cliff bars and a few pouches of tuna/salmon
- titanium spoon (have too many of these lol)
- 3-4 drum liners
- 50' of paracord
- Air pump (powered from the car)
- Jumper Cables
- Basic first aid kit
- Fire steel
- the jack and tools that came with the car (but I have AAA so I would never bother putting on a spare on the road unless it was life and death).
- extra cr123 batteries

I also always carry a 3.5" folding knife on my person along with a 2x cr123 powered light (currently a 4Sevens Quark tactical). I travel to different projects a lot. If I'm in a state / at a job site where I can legally carry a pistol on me I generally have one with at least 1 extra mag. If I can't, but can carry one in my car I have a pistol and 1-2 mags there when it's reasonably secure (i.e. gated job site). I can run from my current job site to the apartment they put me up in... and it's a warm climate in the south. When I worked up north and lived farther away, I also carried a change of warm clothing in my car, a 20 degree sleeping bag, hiking boots, extra socks, more fire starting stuff, fixed blade knife, etc... all in a hiking backpack.

The resQme tool has the seat-belt cutter built-in too. It's $10 and fits anywhere. If you're in an accident you don't have to wait for firefighters to hop on out because you couldn't even break the window. :D

You could also use the headrest (not how you think) if it comes out. http://www.lifehack.org/articles/li...eak-your-car-window-emergency-situations.html

I laugh when I see a grown man standing on the side of the road with a flat tire and AAA is there changing it for him. The last time I had a flat tire I was on my lunch hour and wearing a white button down shirt and khakis and I pulled over to the side of the road, rolled up my sleevers and changed it myself.

What kind of pussy can't change a flat tire? :colbert:

As far as getting somebody else to change your tire ..

I once had 2 flat tires at the same time, but only 1 spare ... that SUCKED!

Or my dad once was taking myself, my brother, my sister, and the dog on a road trip when I was maybe 10 or 11. It was during extremely cold weather and we were just north of the IL/WI border on I94.

Tire blew out, traffic was heavy, he was in left lane, and couldnt get over to the right so he used the left shoulder ...

Anyhow, it sucked, he managed to run to a gas station a mile or so away crossing 3 lanes of busy interstate traffic ...

Since then, he bought a CB to keep in the car, and has always had Cell phones since the mid 90s....
