Hi,

I am trying to overclock my rig with core i7 870 processor. and I did it sucessfully from 2.93 to 3.65 ghz, I did 24 hour prime 95 test (small fft) and its very stable at 3.65 ghz, but the problem is if I go beyond and change any setting it dosnt work. so please look at my setting below and help me to go further.

core i7 870 - 166 * 22 = 3.65 ghz
cpu vcore = +0.144 volts
vtt = auto
dram volt = auto
qpi ratio = 16
ram timings = 9 9 9 24

turbo / CIE / and all power saving options are disabled

Ram - Gskill F3 12800CL9D 4GBNQ (1600 mhz)
Motherboard - MSI H55M E33
GPU - Nvidia Quadro FX 3800 1GB
PSU - CM GX650w
Cooler - CM Hyper 212+
HDD - Hitach deskstar 500gb

my temps in full load = 71 c

my bios dosnt allow to directly set the cpu volt I can only offset the voltage, this dosnt gives me clear picture of what the actual cpu voltage will be, so I checked it in cpuz and it says 1.12 volts (in full load).

also when I give it load the cpu voltage drops down, where it suppose to increase from idle.

I have no idea what setting I should tweak further, I seek your guidence.

Thanks
ravi

I know its vcore, but if i increase it the system goes unstable.

what you see in my rig is it is stable at 3.65 ghz with 1.12 volt as per cpuz (bios +0.144 volts)

the increase in volt dosnt gives me stablity.

may be there is some settings that needs to be done in order to bump the voltage. thats exactly you guys can tell.

I'm using this page to check out your BIOS because I'm not familiar with it: http://a-techno.com.ua/5226.html . I would first set all your voltages to something besides "Auto" so you know what they are. Put VTT at 1.19V for instance. Also put your RAM voltage at whatever is specified by the manufacturer and make sure it's running at or below it's rated speed to remove it from the equation.

This, do not leave any voltages on auto. set them all manually. When i was overclocking my 930 i was fine with all voltages on auto(other than vcore) up to 3.8Ghz, then i set them all manually and slowly increased them as needed as i went up to 4.2Ghz.

With your loaded temps currently at 71*c it looks like you are at the thermal limit of your cooler currently. Unless you can tame the temps your most likely better off just stopping now. What case are you using? Single or dual fan on the Hyper 212+? I'd suggest working on cooling before you try higher.

But if you wanna try higher then worry about cooling it's up to you.

Here's what I'd suggest to start. Save your current profile if possible in your bios or just write down your settings. Set bclk back to 133 and enable all power saving features, set voltages on Auto or Normal if it's an option. Then use something like prime or intel burn test to load 1 single core to envoke the 3.6ghz mode. Use cpu-z to verify single core load is @3.6ghz and see what the VID is feeding the chip. Gives an idea of what intel thinks it needs.

Althought most guides will tell you to disable C1E, SpeedStep, and all power saving features in bios it most of the time isn't needed. Intel designed the chip to run at multiple speeds and voltages. Overclocking doesn't change the design of the chip only the speeds it runs at. Most of the time a person can get a respectable overclock with stability and keep the power saving features at the same time. The one thing you'll have to worry about and you'll have to figure out is what bios settings it takes to kill your dual/single core multipliers. Most likely something like advance c-state, eist, etc. Disabling all of the power saving features is a last ditch effort to reach an overclocking goal or if your going for some insane overclocking.

Waiting for feedback from OP :)

Im betting it's the output quality off your psu. That thing goes out of spec well below it's rated output (400w), and could definitely limit an OC. If your board is having issued supplying more than 1.12v stably to the CPU then i would say that maybe the VRMs might not be up to the task either. Still, this seems highly unlikely, as MSI has been putting all top grade parts on their newer boards.

You guys have clear picture of my config, I dont have much experience on what setting works better if I have to set everything manualy, can you guys tell me what individual settings can be?
