what's harder for you, dips or pull ups?

pull-ups are palms facing away, and are harder for me than dips and chin ups.

pull-ups hit my lats like no other exercise can.
both are great body weight exercises.

You don't have dips in your poll. But for me pull-ups are the hardest. Probably the same for most people.

in order of hardest to easiest:

pull ups
chin ups
dips.

I can do ~12 pull ups, 15 chin ups (not sure as I rarely do them) and probably 25 dips (also not sure, as I always do them with 60-90lbs of weight).

I can do dips like they're pushups--all day. :)

Pullups and chinups however... My max for chinups is more than 15, less than 25. My max for pullups is embarassing.

Somebody does biceps more than lats.

I've been focusing on lats for the past 3 weeks so it's all good :)

i would've never guessed.

well, first of all, there are a lot more muscles involved: dips primarily use your triceps, chest and shoulders. even some back muscles (rhomboids, traps) get involved. pullups work your lats, biceps, rhomboids, and a few other muscles around your shoulder blades.

secondly, it doesn't make sense to compare muscle strength by comparing these two exercises. they are compound movements that involve many muscles pushing at various angles on many joints/bones, so a direct comparison isn't at all accurate.

I have shoulder problems, so dips are easy given my tricep strength, but pullups are horrible because my shoulders start to scream in pain.

Unbelievable. I never thought I'd meet a person that finds doing pullups and chinups easier than doing bar dips like I have in this thread.

Like some others, I can do bar dips day and night. I do them fast or slow. I do them with my legs perpendicular to the floor or with them bent at a 90.

The number of pullups I can do is too embarassing to quantify. My back is not weak, not at all. I can do a lot of bent over rows with a fairly heavy weight using an Olympic bar. But pullups? Not my cup of tea.

pull ups are harder for me.

I've done one wide grip pull up with 40kg weighted to me :)

Dips
50reps of deps, all to below parallel, parallel doesn't cut it for me
+25kg x 7reps x 3sets to me.

Dips should be easier as there is less range of movement involved in a dip then when compared to a pull up (chin above bar) but as always we are built different and some guys will be better at pull ups.

Chins I can hit 21reps strict.

They're about the same for me. My max pullups is 11, and my max dips is 12. Of course, if you're speaking of strict (non-kipping) pullups, I can only do about 6 of them, so I would say they're harder.

Here, I'll make all you guys feel better - I can do no more than 9 chinups (full extension to near lockout), and like 3 pull ups.

Much improved over my ability to do 0 up until 2 years ago.

am I the only one who can do almost same amount of pullups as chins?

about 10 pullups or 11-12 chins after a tough workout.

Dips are about the same difficulty for me. I can do about 12 chin ups, 10 pull ups, and about 10 dips if I go all the way down.

Before my shoulder injury, I could do 30+ dips. I think my max deadhang pullups while bulking was 17 (which was almost like weighted pullups since I gained 15 pounds in like 7 weeks, lol). Dips have always been extraordinarily easy compared to pullups/chinups.

I gotta admit, I can't imagine pull-ups being easier than dips. You two who voted dips: are you sure we're all talking about the same exercises?

Dips are harder for me. My triceps have always been weaker. I guess I need to work them more! Or perhaps the majority of you overwork your chest~

Dips are an exercise that takes time, like pull ups and chin ups. You can improve these numbers VERY quickly at the start imo.

When I was 16 (8yrs ago) I was barely able to do 10reps of dips. Now they feel effortless up to 20reps with a maximum of 50reps in a set.

My triceps and biceps are pretty even as I hammer the pull ups, wide grip pull ups, chins and dips.

I hardly do any chest work. I keep that pretty much down to bench press and I use a slightly shorter grip so it focuses more on my triceps then my chest anyway.

Like most, I voted pull-ups. The most I've done in a single set so far is: 17 dips, 5 pull-ups and 6 chin-ups (all hanging/strict, and dips slightly below parallel). I'm trying hard to improve my pull-ups since I think they are a great exercise and I like how chins work my biceps. I'm happy with my progress as in the fall of 2007 I couldn't do a single pull-up. Dips I find easy until about rep 15, I'm going to switch to weighted to improve my strength.
